We get asked all the time about how we choose wines for the business. Normally we insist on tasting everything which goes into the shop or online. There are a few exceptions to this where we know the vineyard or even the winemaker, but in the vast majority of cases we taste at either a trade tasting or a private tasting somewhere. It’s a tough life.
It is difficult on occasions as the flight of wines can run from the basic wines through to the top end of range and we have to be very cognisant that our customers want wines in all price categories and styles. Every wine is different as is everybody’s taste.
We recently had a tasting with Deakin Estates in our shop premises. Our preconception about these wines was that they were ok wines, value for money, but not a mainliner for us. It was nice to have these preconceptions destroyed by tasting an excellent range of estate wines which more than offered value for money. The wines were clearly well made, utilising blends of differently harvested single varietals and the entry level ones in particular were extremely pleasing. Nice to be surprised and we will look to place these wines firmly in our range and promote them going forward
