What’s
a delicate, pernickety grape like this doing in a sun-drenched robust
country like Australia, you might ask.
You’d be asking a good question. Pinot Noir
is a challenge to grow in any part of the world, and as the Aussies
aren’t the sort of guys to resist a bit of competition, they’re
out there having a jolly good go at getting it right. What’s
emerged is a handful of styles all Australia’s own, and a
proud group they are too. Growers in the coolest of regions are
seeing the most success – that’s areas like the Adelaide
Hills, Tasmania, Mornington Penninsula and the Yarra Valley. Here
the wines tend to come out strawberry/raspberry-fruited when young,
then get progressively more mushroomy, and savoury with age. The
best styles of all come from vines with a little age, which haven’t
been harvested too heavily, and from wines given a gentle maturation
in oak barrels.

MadFish Wines,
Pinot Noir, 2008
The wine is a medium intensity red in colour. The nose shows many aspects of Pinot Noir: black cherries, strawberries, floral and spice characters. The palate unfolds with soft red fruit weight upfront leading to mushroom/spice complexity through the middle of the palate. Fine supple tannins extend through the finish, balanced with lingering red fruit and a touch of leather.

Shaw & Smith,
Pinot Noir, 2008
[Adelaide Hills]
Pinot Noir is the most temperamental of varieties and remains the ultimate challenge for many winemakers - Shaw + Smith has accepted this challenge albeit in a ‘small batch’ way. Site selection, the right clonal mix, miniscule yields and fastidious vineyard management are essential to success.
The result is an aromatic, medium bodied amd thoroghly delicious single vineyard Pinot Noir

PHI,
Pinot Noir, 2007
[Yarra Valley]
Winemaker Steve Webber has become somewhat fixated with all things Burgundian of late and it shows through in this extraordinary Pinot. The aromas of violet, strawberry, mineral and delicate spicy wood lead through to a palate that simply dances across the tongue leaving a silky trail of forest fruits.
Only made in exceptional vintages, this Reserve wine is a unique expression of the region and the character of the particular vintage. Led by Tom Carson, Yering Station’s winemaking team has a non-interventionist approach, allowing the underlying character of the grape to fully express itself. The result is outstanding, superbly crafted wine of utmost distinction.
