Wrattonbully, like Padthaway, neighbours Coonawarra, and choosen for wine growing because of the ‘terra rossa’ soils. The first commercial vineyard was established in the late 1960s (Wrattonbully Vineyard). Further plantings took place in the 1970s, but it was in the 1990s when the majority was planted. Wrattonbully is now one of key regions in South Australia supplying bulk quantities of fruit to wineries outside the region. The climate is slightly warmer than Coonawarra, but slightly cooler than Padthaway. The main wine styles: Red – Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon.
