Kooyung Beurrot Pinot Gris.
The Kooyong vineyard is located on the Mornington Peninsula at Tuerong, on Miocene sedimentary soils. Our wines are made from domain grown, handpicked grapes and aim to manifest terroir: the integration of our geology and soils with the macroclimate of our region, the mesoclimates of the various sites within our vineyard and the weather of the annual grape growing season. Our cultural operations in the vineyard and practices in the winery endeavour to articulate these unique characteristics diligently, respectfully and without artifice.
The grapes are gently whole-bunch pressed directly into all-used French oak barriques, where fermentation takes place without inoculation. After fermentation the wine is aged on lees (without battonage) for 10 months. It is bottled without fining and with minimal filtration.
The 2013-2014 growing season started with a warm winter followed by strong early season growth and an early spring with above average temperatures. An extended cold and wet period in October and November lead to a prolonged flowering period with reduced fruit set, resulting in below average yields. This cold period continued throughout December, finally broken by a warm summer with several heat waves during the month of January. A warm February and the lower yields brought an earlier than usual start to harvest. Mild March weather and the lower yields made for a short and steady harvest for both our viticultural and winery teams. While yields were low, the quality of the fruit was very high producing wines that impress with depth, length and linear direction. Tasting Note —- April 2015 With a hint of bronze in the colour, the expressive nose shows classic Beurrot characteristics —- poached pear, vanilla and Meyer lemon. The unctuous palate, with flavours of orange blossom and quince, has a lush texture backed by tight acidity and a dry finish.

“Kooyong means `where the wild fowl gather` and was so named as the property neighbours Devilbend Reserve, a home for many local waterbirds.
The winemaking at Kooyong Estate is taken care of by the extremely talented – and highly regarded – Sandro Mosele, a former Geneticist and Scientist whom has been the Chief Winemaker since 1996. Sandro also makes the wines for the Gjergia family`s other property, Port Phillip Estate, with both sharing one of the most modern – and spectacular – cellar doors on the Peninsula.”
This is a modern wine region. There was a dabbling in viticulture in the late 1800s and then in the 1950s but it wasn’t until Baillieu Myer of Myer stores planted vines in the early 70s did the region begin as a commercial wine producer. Many vineyards and wineries followed, most of them small, producing boutique wines. The climate is regarded as cool and exposed to wind chill from the frequent strong winds. The main wine styles: White – Chardonnay, Pinot Gris; Red – Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot.
