Yarra Valley Chardonnay

Yarra Valley Chardonnay

Giant Steps Yarra Valley Chardonnay is an elegant, refined and delicate Chardonnay that is also surprisingly voluptuous. The nose shows classic Yarra characters of fresh melon and intense citrus flavours, underpinned with notes of marzipan and hazelnut. Crisp acidity ensures a refreshing, clean finish.

Lovely appealing traditional nose with stone fruits, butter and oak. Dry, medium bodied wine that is nicely balanced, edging on the acid side. Peach and lemon flavours with a touch of yeasty lees. Well made and a good example.

A classic Burgundian style Chardonnay from one of the top producers in the Yarra Valley, with a little Aussie attitude. This wine is well-balanced and fresh, try pairing this with white meat or seafood.

  • Vineyard Notes

Sourced from vineyards across the Yarra Valley. 50% sourced from the upper Yarra ranges.

  • Winemaking

The Chardonnay grapes are chilled overnight before they are whole bunch pressed the following morning. The juice is immediately transferred into 500L French oak puncheons. 15% of the oak is new, while the remaining 85% is seasoned. The juice is fermented naturally using indigenous yeast over 10 days, finishing with lots of stirring at the end of ferment. Around 10% of the batches go through malolactic fermentation. The wines are then sulphured and kept on lees in barrel until October, when they are blended and bottled.

  • Food Matches

BBQ roasted prawns with citrus dressing. Pan seared john dory fish with capers. Roasted asparagus with mustard vinaigrette and slithered almonds.

Established in 1997 in the Yarra Valley, Giant Steps has built a reputation based on expressive wines with purity and finesse. The Giant Steps wines are a direct reflection of their individual vineyard sites, located across the Yarra Valley from Tarrawarra to Gladysdale.

Giant Steps

Giant Steps was founded by wine industry pioneer Phil Sexton, who ventured from Margaret River to Yarra Valley to find the ideal site to cultivate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of purity and finesse.
Phil found his holy grail near Gruyere in the Sexton vineyard, which he planted in 1997 on the steep slopes of the Warramate Ranges. A mad jazz fan, Phil named the winery after John Coltrane’s album and fitting metaphor “Giant Steps.”
In 2003, Winemaker Steve Flamsteed came aboard, and the two set about producing a range of iconic Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that express a profound sense of place from six finite sites in Yarra Valley.

Yarra Valley

Victoria is a small state in area, but home to possibly the largest number of wineries in Australia, most of them which are small family-run operations. Victoria’s diverse topography, combining numerous mountain ranges, like the Grampians and the Victorian Pyrenees throughout the centre; flat plains in the northeast; and hilly, ocean-cooled reaches in the Melbourne area, make its vineyards amongst the most scenic in Australia. An enormous range of wine styles are available, and virtually every varietal flourishes in some part of the state.

Chardonnay

Australia’s most widely planted white grape variety. The heavily oaked styles of the earlier nineties are now being replaced with styles emphasising the regional fruit and greater complexity. The cooler climate regions producing styles of great elegance and finesse.
