Jancis Robinson MW awards 18.5+ points to the 2016 vintage of Henschke’s `Hill of Grace` Eden Valley Shiraz – “one of those (few) wines that can truly be called an icon.” The 2016 is “a really very unusual combination of lift/freshness with intensity of historic Shiraz”, which “really is impossible to spit out.” With a score of 19.5+ points, Matthew Jukes names this 59th vintage (55th release) of `Hill of Grace` “an aficionado’s wine”, remarking that “you can taste the site so clearly here and it seems that every vine is singing its 160-year-old song in perfect harmony…” The 2016 `Hill of Grace` receives an impressive 99 points from Sarah Ahmed, who judges it to be “powerful but perfectly proportioned; the consummate Shiraz.”

The “extra special” `Hill of Roses` Eden Valley Shiraz 2016, made in small quantities from the Post Office block of younger vines within the `Hill of Grace` Vineyard, is awarded 19+ points by Matthew, who adds “the overriding sense of red rose perfume is insane and the fruit is refreshingly pure and silky, too…there is a musky five-spice note which cuts through with savoury élan…a mesmerising and all-encompassing wine.” Jancis rates the “really pretty lovely” 2016 `Hill of Roses` 17.5 points, while Sarah says it “oozes with personality…a singular slice of history.” Henschke’s `Mount Edelstone` Eden Valley Shiraz 2016 – the 64th release of Australia’s longest consecutively made single-vineyard Shiraz – is rated 19.5+ points by Matthew, who “cannot recommend this vintage enough.” Matthew says “it explodes out of the glass with one of the most complete aromatic displays of the year”, while on the palate “the overall balance is pinpoint perfect, with refreshing, vital tannins and crunchy acidity.” The `Mount Edelstone` 2016 receives 18 points from Jancis (“such intensity and so much history in this beautifully balanced wine”) and 97 points  from Sarah for its “terrific purity, poise and panache.”

Sarah adds that “Henschke’s trademark elegance is evident throughout the single-vineyard wines, including the `Cyril Henschke` Cabernet Sauvignon“, which “wears its plush fruit and firm structure lightly” and scores 96 points. Matthew awards the 2016 vintage 18.5+ points, saying “I am a lifelong Cyril fan…there is no doubt that the Eden Valley is home to truly great red wines and Cyril is my favourite Cabernet by a mile.” Last but by no means least, the “spectacular” `Keyneton Euphonium` Barossa Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Cabernet Franc 2016 is rated 18.5 points by Matthew for offering “a true sense of Australian vinous history at the same time as rewarding you with incredible value for money”, while Jancis describes it as “very winning indeed…very much in the Henschke style with lift and richness but admirable subtlety” and Sarah calls it “a sumptuous, savoury twist on classic Shiraz-Cabernet blends…”
