Bethany Cabernet Merlot

Bethany Cabernet Merlot

Bethany Cabernet Merlot

This Cabernet Merlot boasts vibrant red fruit on both the nose and palate is supported by restrained oak.  Although drinking well now, this wine will continue to develop in flavour and complexity with medium term cellaring. Enjoy with roast beef & rich pasta dishes.

Dark ruby red with hints of purple. Spicy blackcurrant and mulberries with savoury, earthy complexity. Medium bodied with fine grained tannin sitting around a core of bright acidity and fresh red currant, blackberry and mulberry fruits. A juicy but extremely fluid and supple palate with good length and drive. Finish is long and clean with dark fruit and spiced oak.

With some of the oldest vines in the Barossa, Bethany Wines has a special place in the region’s winemaking story.

Johann Gottlob Schrapel and his family arrived from Silesia on the George Washington in 1844. This was just eight years after South Australia was settled. Like many Silesian migrants, they travelled by ox cart to Bethany (Bethanien), and established the Barossa’s first settlement.

Johann planted the first vineyard in 1852 from cuttings carried from Europe. He built a wine cellar and had reputation as a winemaker. Despite this our family were grape growers for the next four generations.

In 1981, fifth generation brothers Robert and Geoff established Bethany Wines. They built a winery in the quarry where the early pioneers had hewn stone for their homes. They crushed 2 tonnes of Shiraz and Riesling, launching the next chapter of the Schrapel wine story.

The early 1980s were tough for Barossa grape growers. A glut followed a red wine boom and grape prices fell below production cost. The State Government wanted growers to pull out old Shiraz and Grenache vines. They encouraged growers to plant new varieties or leave the industry.

Fortunately, the brothers chose to establish a tradition of winemaking from this undervalued yet irreplaceable resource of old vineyards.

Bethany Wines has built a reputation as one of Australia’s finest wine producers, underpinned by a strong sense of family tradition since the mid-1800s.

The winery is owned and run by the Schrapel family, who first planted vines in 1852 soon after arriving from Silesia. Like many of their fellow Germanic migrants, they established a home in Bethany and cleared the land to grow winegrapes and graze animals. More than a century later, fifth generation descendants, brothers Geoff and Robert Schrapel, established Bethany Wines as a wine company.

Today, Bethany Wines boasts one of the finest views overlooking stunning sweeping vineyards in the Barossa Valley and beyond. Geoff and Robert’s philosophy has remained constant – to produce exceptional wines that express the microclimate and terroir of the Barossa Ranges and Eden Valley.

The winery specialises in ultra-premium Shiraz and a range of other table wines including Riesling, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Merlot, Shiraz Cabernet and Old Vine Grenache. Bethany Wines is also world-renowned for its Old Quarry Fronti (white port) and Old Quarry Tawn

South Australia

South Australia is the largest wine producing state of Australia. It may be surprising to most that the Riverland region is the state’s largest grape producing area. The Barossa Valley is famed for its full-bodied, rich, ripe and generous reds. The Coonawarra is internationally renowned for its Cabernet Sauvignon (and prized ‘terra rossa’ soils). Padthaway, McLaren Vale, and the Clare Valley all make major contributions, and the importance of the Adelaide Hills is rapidly increasing.

Cabernet Sauvignon Blends

“Australia produces it’s own unique style of Cabernet Sauvignon blend styles, unlike any others found throughout the world, with Shiraz. The fleshy Shiraz fruit weaves itself into the Cabernet’s framework, producing a wine with fabulous structure and flavour.
Alternatively there is the classic Bordeaux blends (Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec etc) adding more complexity and lessening any harshness of the tannins.
There’s always one thing about Cabernet Sauvignon blends: the quality and character of Cabernet Sauvignon shines through.”
