Clonakilla Canberra District Riesling

Clonakilla Canberra District Riesling

Murrumbateman’s cool, continental climate and decomposed granite soils are perfectly suited to Riesling.

The weather leading up to vintage 2019 was marked by lower than average rainfall in winter and spring. Things were just starting to look seriously dry when two rain events in January came to our rescue, delivering 110 mm between them. The grapes were picked in perfect condition and full of intense flavour.

Drink now for its razor fine floral, citrus-edged fruit or cellar for up to 15 years and watch it develop lime and toast characters with age

Clonakilla

John Kirk and his son Tim run this small family winery in the rolling hills north of Canberra. They produce a range of wines but their speciality is in the two varieties that originate from the Rhone Valley: Syrah (Shiraz) and Viognier. Clonakilla is probably one of the leading estates in Canberra and has the reputation as a leading Australian ’boutique’ winery.

Canberra District

The Canberra District is a small but exciting wine region, full of boutique wineries and passionate winemakers. As a winegrowing region it dates back to the early 1970s, and today there are numerous wineries in the region. The climate is regarded as mild. The main wine styles: Red – Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet-Merlot, Shiraz; White – Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc.

Riesling

Possible one of the greatest white grape varieties in the world. It can make outstanding wines with power, flavour, elegance, and has the ability to age. The range of styles vary from the light and crisp to rich sweet desert wines.
