Colonial Estate Explorateur

Colonial Estate Explorateur

Explorateur – “The Explorer”. The Barossa Valley is first and foremost famous for Shiraz above all other varieties, so it’s a natural choice. These grapes are handpicked and given a French twist in their winemaking to deliver something outside of the norm.
Tasting Notes
Deep purple with red brick flash around the edge. There are evident blackberry characters with hints of liquorice, oak and aniseed. The palate is softly spoken and fruit driven initially with blackberries, plums and liquorice notes giving your insight into what is ahead. An approachable mid palate, which is full-flavored, while the fine-grained tannins finish with complex notes of olives, cashew nuts and oak. An alluring finish, which is moreish and smooth, yet has great length.
The vineyards that make up Explorateur are based in the North-Western Barossa Valley. This is a belt of land that runs from North West of Tanunda – Marananga, Greenock, Moppa, Ebenezer, and through to Stockwell, just north of Nuriootpa. Cropping levels are kept low to ensure the fruit flavour is focused. The same equipment that is accorded to our more expensive wines is made available to Explorateur. Fermentation is French in approach for up to two thirds of the wine made, the rest is vinified in a more Australian way.

The Colonial Estate’s approach to making wines in Australia is old world influenced. This is what separates The Colonial Estate from other wineries around the world. No expense has been spared, with only the finest of winemaking practices being utilised. Our aim is to produce wines of outstanding stature to set them apart from all the rest!
The Colonial Estate is a range of limited-production Australian wines with an old world approach. The fruit is hand picked and carefully selected; the reds receive cold pre-maceration, fermentation, pressing and maceration on skins prior to ageing in French oak; whilst the whites get whole-bunch pressing, lees stirring and are fermented with naturally occurring yeasts.
