Driftwood Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Smooth and well balanced with layered red and black berry fruit, nougat and floral characters enveloped by soft and silky tannins, carrying the wine to a lingering sweetly fruity finish.

BLEND 91.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5.5% Petit Verdot, 2.6% Malbec, 0.4% Merlot COLOUR Vibrant, deep ruby red with purple hues. AROMATICS Lovely intense dark forest fruits and blueberries, a perfumed floral lift and dark chocolate notes with subtle integrated cedar oak and hints of liquorice. PALATE A beautifully structured full-bodied wine with powerful refined, supple tannins, harmonious oak and succulent acidity framing bright cassis, blue fruits and hints of aniseed and dark chocolate; resulting in an elegant complete wine of great length. OAK MATURATION 30% new 100% French Oak. 15 – 18 months in barrel. AGEING POTENTIAL Very Good – 10 years.

WINEMAKING All batches were inoculated with yeast and co-fermented with MLF bacteria. A combination of cold soak or extended skin contact for 35 days, using aerative and closed pump-overs ensured a range of flavour and tannin profiles, capturing the best qualities from each block. MLF was completed in tank before being racked to barrel for maturation. Following extensive sensory evaluation, batches including a small amount of petit Verdot and malbec were blended in August 2017 then allowed to integrate for a further 3 months in old oak.

VINTAGE 2018 Margaret River just keeps on giving, another great season that started early, continued warm, provided some nervous moments but finished solidly. Excellent canopy management in the vineyard and careful netting to protect against bird damage allowed the whites to build intensity of flavour and aromas in line with balanced acid. Harvest commenced on the 5th February with the final harvest being Driftwood’s newly grafted Cabernet Sauvignon in block 2 on 8th April, showing bucket loads of promise for the future.

Driftwood Estate

Driftwood Estate is a boutique winery set in the stunning Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River, Western Australia. Established by Tom and Helen Galopoulos in 1989 on what had previously been a country retreat, the winery immediately received acclaim when its first wine, a Semillon produced in 1993, won a special commendation in a British competition.
In 2009, leading Australian wine writer James Halliday rated Driftwood Estate as one of the best wineries in the Margaret River region. This result has continued into the 2018 Wine Companion, where Driftwood Estate has again been rated a 5 Star Winery. The vine resources are exceptional, having had years of nurturing to ensure they produce premium fruit showcasing the Wilyabrup sub-region beautifully.
The winemaking philosophy behind the Driftwood wines is one of simplicity – quality wines are made in the vineyard. While winemaking can have a positive input, having premium quality fruit is essential. This is why Driftwood Estate is so fortunate to be located in one of the greatest viticultural areas in the world, sourcing super premium fruit year in year out. With premium quality fruit, our wine making philosophy is all about protecting and expressing the qualities found in the grapes, so that the wine lover can enjoy the pure, varietal and regional flavours from the Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River.

Western Australia

Regarded as one of Australia’s best wine producing regions. It is synonymous with a new era in Australian wine. Margaret River really began its vineyard life as a result of two research reports from Californian viticulturalist Professor Harold Olmo and the Western Australian scientist Dr John Gladstone. In 1965 Dr Gladstone’s report indicated that the region had all the attributes to produce world quality wines. This advise was acted on by Dr Tom Cullity who set up his Vasse Felix vineyard near Willyabrup, followed by Dr Kevin Cullen and his wife Di who set up Cullen Wines. The climate is regarded as ‘cool’ because of its long slow ripening season. This region is regarded along with Coonawarra and the Yarra Valley as one of the premium Cabernet Sauvignon areas in Australia. The main wine styles: Red – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet-Merlot, Shiraz; White – Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho.
