Henschke Hill of Roses

Henschke Hill of Roses

Henschke Hill of Roses

This wine is named as a tribute to Johann Gottlieb Rosenzweig, one of the early Barossa Lutheran pioneers who settled at Parrot Hill in Eden Valley. Their toil, perseverance and conservatism in hardship has meant the many generations that followed have rejoiced in the riches of those efforts. Shiraz, growing on the fertile slopes in the Eden Valley region, is just one of those blessings. The wine was produced from a small selection of low-yielding dry-grown shiraz vines from the Hill of Grace vineyard, named the Post Office block, that were a mere 23 years old at the time of picking and therefore considered too young for inclusion into Hill of Grace Shiraz. The quality of the grapes from this selection produced a wine that was too good to be declassified and warranted a separate bottling and limited release. The Post Office ruins are on the land that was previously Rosenzweig property, the Rosenzweig name translating from German to ‘rose twig’.

Henschke Hill of Roses is a very deep crimson with red hues. Attractive and alluring aromas of spiced Satsuma plums, blueberries and briary blackberries, with notes of black pepper, anise, fennel and cinnamon, supported by herbaceous nuances of crushed sage. Round and generous, with spicy and wild blue and black fruits, a focussed mid-palate of elegant structure and silky tannins that create beautiful texture and balance for an extraordinarily long finish.
Made from a small patch of 25yo vines on the Hill of Grace considered too young for inclusion in Hill of Grace in the magnificent ’12 vintage, matured in French hogsheads (71% new) for 18 months. This has missile power and drive on an exact course stretching out far into the distance. Blackberry, blackcurrant, licorice…leather and earth flavours are wrapped by bonds of implacable tannins on a palate of prodigious length… James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2019, August 2018

Henschke

“The Henschke family is one of the longest-established wine names in the Barossa. Johann Christian Henschke purchased land for a farm at Keyneton in 1861 and planted a small vineyard and orchard, and produced his first commercial vintage in 1868. His son, Paul Gotthard, continued farming and winemaking and planted more vines to increase wine production. Upon his father’s death in 1914, third-generation Paul Alfred took over the property and as demand for fortified wines grew, winemaking assumed greater significance. Each generation built upon the reputation for quality, but it was fourth-generation Cyril Alfred Henschke who in 1958 created the wine that has most captured the red wine world’s imagination – Hill of Grace. His first vintage of this Shiraz was produced in 1958.
Today, fifth-generation Stephen Henschke and his wife Prue uphold the family name and reputation, as winemaker and viticulturist respectively. The original two-storey cellar, built into the side of the hill in time for the 1868 vintage, has been added to throughout the generations. Now covered with ivy, the stone building retains an old-world charm with its open fermenters and winemaking memorabilia on display.”

South Australia

South Australia is the largest wine producing state of Australia. It may be surprising to most that the Riverland region is the state’s largest grape producing area. The Barossa Valley is famed for its full-bodied, rich, ripe and generous reds. The Coonawarra is internationally renowned for its Cabernet Sauvignon (and prized ‘terra rossa’ soils). Padthaway, McLaren Vale, and the Clare Valley all make major contributions, and the importance of the Adelaide Hills is rapidly increasing.
