Innocent Bystander Syrah

Innocent Bystander Syrah – The nose sees a complex blend of five spice, orange zest, juniper, ripe cherries, red summer berries and dark chocolate. Firm bright tannins dominate the palate with a brooding texture. Wild blackberries and raspberries lead into the long savoury finish.

Syrah is a smooth, sophisticated expression of Shiraz and the cool hillsides of the Yarra Valley are perfect for making this intriguing style. Generous in fruit but restrained in oak, subtly perfumed and tantalisingly spicy it’s made to be savoured.

Region: Yarra Valley

Alc/Vol: 13.5%

Smells like: White pepper, red currant and rasberry

Tastes like: Cherry compote, loganberry, spice and soft tannins

Goes with: Braised beef cheek, spicy pork pizza, hard cheeses, dark rooms, dark chocolate and dangerous ideas.

A warm, relatively early vintage with perfect ripening conditions lead to a supple, savoury fruit-driven Syrah, with the right dose of peppery spice.

“The Yarra Valley is our home and where it all began for Innocent Bystander. It has a wine history that dates back well over 100 years, however it’s reputation has been cemented in the last 15 years, largely thanks to the fantastic Pinot Noir and Chardonnay produced here. It’s the soils, climate and the combination of cool mountainside vineyards and warmer, valley floor sites that provide the diversity and complexity of flavours and aromas that make our Yarra Valley wines so spectacular.”

Innocent Bystander

“Innocent Bystander is a Yarra Valley based winery producing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir alongside several emerging varietals including Pinot Gris, Moscato, Sangiovese & cool climate grown Shiraz. The label first came about when the Giant Steps team decided to produce wines from the many brilliant vineyards they came across in the Yarra Valley and beyond.
A visit to the winery in Healesville`s main street is a fascinating experience. Built around gravity flow principles and designed for hand making small batches of wine, the winery is an exercise in function over form, much like the strongly expressed views of its owners and winemaking team.
These are approachable, drinkable wines that deliver abundant fruit flavour – their winemakers like to think of them as “a bloody good drink!” “

Yarra Valley

Victoria is a small state in area, but home to possibly the largest number of wineries in Australia, most of them which are small family-run operations. Victoria’s diverse topography, combining numerous mountain ranges, like the Grampians and the Victorian Pyrenees throughout the centre; flat plains in the northeast; and hilly, ocean-cooled reaches in the Melbourne area, make its vineyards amongst the most scenic in Australia. An enormous range of wine styles are available, and virtually every varietal flourishes in some part of the state.
