The Katnook Estate range of premium quality, single varietal wines is an expression of the classic and unique characteristics of the Coonawarra wine region.

Since 1980, Senior Winemaker Wayne Stehbens has passionately crafted the Katnook Estate range from selected distinguished vineyards, with a philosophy that reflects the essence of Coonawarra’s unique terroir.

Steeped in heritage and tradition, the Estate range is recognised and awarded both locally and internationally for its exceptional hallmark quality and unique Coonawarra style.

Katnook Estate Merlot 2014 has the following characteristics;

Colour :: Deep plum reds with purple tinges.

Nose :: Red berry fruits, spiced plum and dark cherry are supported by subtle oak aromas. Complex earthy notes are finely integrated with hints of forest floor and vanilla.

Palate :: Richly layered dark fruits of blackcurrant, plump cherry and spicy plum. Subtle earthiness and game effortlessly combine with vanillan flavours and maturation complexities. The full palate structure has fine grained, slightly drying tannins, adding to the complexity of flavours.

Steeped in heritage and tradition, Katnook Estate wines epitomise ‘Classic Coonawarra’. Since 1980, these single varietal wines have been crafted with fastidious attention to detail. They are finely balanced wines with concentrated fruit flavour and great regional integrity. Delicious now with fine cuisine, Katnook Estate wines will reap the benefits of many years cellaring.

Katnook’s rich history stretches back to 1896, when Coonawarra’s first vintage was crafted in our Woolshed by entrepreneurial wine pioneer, John Riddoch – who immigrated from Scotland. He recognised the enormous potential of the maritime climate and unique terra rossa soils which now define Coonawarra wine styles.

Katnook Estate

The Katnook Estate is one of the most esteemed domains in this premier red wine district, Coonawarra. Katnook Estate’s vineyards occupy the prized “terra rossa” soil and premium varieties grown include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay with many vines being over 30 years old.

Coonawarra

Coonawarra is considered the most renowned wine region in Australia. It has the ‘terra rossa’ soils and some great winemakers, and subsequently responsible for some of the best wines produced in Australia. Most notably red wines and Cabernet Sauvignon in particular. The first vineyard was planted in the 1880s at Yallum, (John Riddoch’s). The region did not establish its reputation as a winemaking area until the 1950s when Wynns and Penfolds purchased acreage on the back of a resurgence in the table wine market. Investment by large and small companies led to expansion, securing Coonawarrra’s status as a great wine. The climate is regarded as Mediterranean. The main wine styles: Red – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet-Merlot blend, Shiraz; White – Chardonnay.

Merlot

The other main grape in Bordeaux, used for blending with Cabernet Sauvignon. This grape produces wines with soft, rich and velvety texture, with very ripe fruit flavour that are low in tannins.
