Katnook Estate Shiraz

Katnook Estate Shiraz – This sophisticated wine displays the excellent structure, balance and generous palate weight that has come to be expected of Shiraz from the Coonawarra. Typical rich raspberry and spice predominate with subtle pepper and liquorice highlights.

Colour: Deep plum with purple hues.

Nose: A complex array of concentrated fruit and oak. Vibrant red forest berries with hints of spice and liquorice.

Palate: Some whole berry fermentation provides vibrant red fruit flavours with nuances of peppery spice. The richly layered palate is complemented by subtle oak maturation characters and lingering, fine grained tannins.

Katnook’s rich history stretches back to 1896, when Coonawarra’s first vintage was crafted in our Woolshed by entrepreneurial wine pioneer, John Riddoch – who immigrated from Scotland. He recognised the enormous potential of the maritime climate and unique terra rossa soils which now define Coonawarra wine styles.
But it all began even earlier. In 1861, Riddoch arrived in Coonawarra, after successfully operating a trading post in the goldfields. He purchased vast parcels of land over the years and was impressed with the remarkable rate of growth of fruit trees and vines. In 1867 John commissioned the building of his ‘Woolshed’ which still operates as Katnook’s barrel room today. Determined to encourage closer settlement in the southeast, in 1890 Riddoch formed the Coonawarra Fruit Colony, established its administration headquarters at ‘Katnook’ and sold off his land in 10 acre blocks. It was here at ‘Katnook’ that the Coonawarra wine region was born.

Katnook Estate

The Katnook Estate is one of the most esteemed domains in this premier red wine district, Coonawarra. Katnook Estate’s vineyards occupy the prized “terra rossa” soil and premium varieties grown include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay with many vines being over 30 years old.

South Australia

Coonawarra is considered the most renowned wine region in Australia. It has the ‘terra rossa’ soils and some great winemakers, and subsequently responsible for some of the best wines produced in Australia. Most notably red wines and Cabernet Sauvignon in particular. The first vineyard was planted in the 1880s at Yallum, (John Riddoch’s). The region did not establish its reputation as a winemaking area until the 1950s when Wynns and Penfolds purchased acreage on the back of a resurgence in the table wine market. Investment by large and small companies led to expansion, securing Coonawarrra’s status as a great wine. The climate is regarded as Mediterranean. The main wine styles: Red – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet-Merlot blend, Shiraz; White – Chardonnay.
