Lethbridge Pinot Noir

Lethbridge Menage Pinot Noir

Lethbridge Menage Pinot Noir

Pinot noir is the sexiest grape variety. And believe me, I have made more than my share of varieties.

It attracts first with its captivating aroma, earthy, mushroomy, enticing with some exotic dark cherry and wet leaves or forest floor. Following the alluring scent, there is the anticipation of taste and if you have chosen well, expect some intoxicating flavours of dark cherry with undercurrents of earth and spice. Finally to texture, the perception of which relates to our sense of touch, a great Pinot Noir will be supple, smooth and silky. You will ‘feel’ this wine in your mouth and if it is great Pinot Noir the taste will persist and you will want more.

Smell, taste, touch and desire… sounds sexy to me.

Lethbridge Wines is a boutique wine producer specialising in highly terroir-driven wines from some of the best vineyards in Victoria’s Geelong region, chosen after an exhaustive search in the mid 1990’s. Owner-winemakers Ray Nadeson and Maree Collis are not your average winemakers of a boutique winery. Both were initially trained as research scientists and hold PhD degrees in chemistry and medicine, respectively. While combining their scientific careers with winemaking, Maree and Ray completed the winemaking degree at Charles Sturt University. Ray states, “winemaking is not really that different to science, both are creative and both involve 99% perspiration, 1% inspiration”.

With total wine production capacity capped at 3,000 cases, the focus is on quality and individuality, with a strong emphasis on capturing the local terroirs. As well as understanding the importance of terroir, the partners have built a unique straw- bale winery, designed to recreate the controlled environment of cellars and caves in Europe. Winemaking is no less ecological: hand-picking, indigenous yeast fermentation, small open fermenters, pigeage (foot-stomping) and minimal handling of the wines throughout the maturation process are all part and parcel of the highly successful Lethbridge approach.

Lethbridge is a 5 Red Star Winery that has built up a cult following in Australia and their wines are rarely seen outside of Melbourne; this is a great opportunity to sample these award winning wines from one of the few overseas allocations.

Vineyards were established in the 1850s, but were abruptly halted in the 1870s when Victorian government ordered removal of vines due to an outbreak of phylloxera. Viticulture didn’t return until the 1960s when Nini and Daryl Sefton established their Idyll vineyard. Since that time a significant number of vineyards and wineries have been established. The climate is regarded as cool and experiences wind chills. The main wine styles: White – Chardonnay; Red – Pinot Noir.

Pinot Noir

“The famous grape of Burgundy. The classic style is medium colour, with fragrant berry, violet and gamey-earthy aromas, and soft, full sweet berry flavours, with velvety tannins.
This variety is most suited to a long cool growing season that are found in southern Victoria (noteable Yarra Valley), Adelaide Hills of South Australia, and southern regions of Western Australia.”
