Madfish Riesling

Madfish Riesling

Madfish Riesling by Burch Family Vineyards in Western Australia

MadFish Wines is named after a remote beach in the south westerly corner of Western Australia. The local legend of MadFish Bay tells of rare and perfect conditions where two opposing tides meet, causing schools of fish to leap out of the water in confusion and chaos.

The MadFish Riesling grows in the Great Southern wine region of Western Australia. This climate is called “continental” and is characterized by long cold winters, warm summers and not a lot of rainfall. Being away from the coast, the difference between the day time and night time temperature is greater than in a region closer to the coast. Riesling seems to like these conditions.

Winemakers say Riesling is tough to make because there is nowhere to hide. It’s just you and the grapes, no oak, no malo, no tricks…

When they make Riesling we strive to preserve and showcase clean, bright citrus and apple, fruit flavours. Sometimes the acidity can be a little high so leaving a bit of sugar at the end of the fermentation gives a nice drinking balance – not too sweet and not too sour – just right

The wine is pale straw in colour with green hues. The nose is wonderfully aromatic showing limes, passion fruit and floral characters while the palate is clean and refreshing with citrus and bath salts to back up the riper fruit flavours. The finish is clean and quite mineral-like with a lovely zing of acid down the palate.

Madfish Riesling may be enjoyed now and over the next year. Great with BBQ’d seafood on a warm summer evening. If it’s too cool to sit outside, then try it with Citrus Cured Trout, Tuna Poke or Fish Tacos.

MadFish Wines

“MadFish, produced by Howard Park Wines, are wines with an emphasis on enjoyment and drinkability. They are for people who enjoy the pleasures of life: family, friends, food and wine.
As the story suggests, the MadFish name is derived from the magnificent MadFish Bay near the Howard Park Great Southern winery. The traditional aboriginal water turtle design on the label is a symbol of perseverance and tolerance – no doubt characteristics displayed by the poor fish in MadFish Bay who are constantly under attack by their predators.”

Western Australia

This state is a relatively small contributor to the country’s grape plantings. However it does not stop the state being responsible for some of the finest wines coming out of Australia. This region clearly has a turning point in its wine producing status. Research reports from Californian viticulturalist Professor Harold Olmo, in the 1950s, and the Western Australian scientist Dr John Gladstone, in the 1960s, indicated that the more southern cooler regions of Western Australia where very well suited for production of world quality wines. Now these regions: Margaret River, Great Southern and Pemberton are the major wine producing regions of Western Australia. Margaret River region is now one of the premium regions of Australia and regarded along with Coonawarra and Yarra Valley as one of the three premium Cabernet Sauvignon areas in Australia.
