Madfish Shiraz

Madfish Shiraz

Madfish Shiraz by Burch Family Vineyards in Western Australia.

A rich, garnet colour with great density. The nose is generous with rich dark cherry, black and blueberry compote aromas, and subtle savoury notes. A little liquorice and chocolate complement the fruit on the palate. The MadFish Shiraz is an opulent, full-bodied wine with excellent concentrated fruit flavours and a soft approachable palate. It boasts an earthy complexity with a gentle tannic structure that ensures drinkability with or without food. Try pairing it with spicy venison sausages, beef bourguignon or lamb moussaka.

Cheery ruby colour in the glass, this Shiraz offers fresh aromas of black cherry, plums and fruit cake spice. A little liquorice and chocolate compliment the fruit on the palate, with a gentle tannic structure that ensures drinkability with or without food.

The 2015 season The first signs of the approaching vintage began with budburst in the early spring of 2014, as the vines shrugged off their winter dormancy. It is during this early season that weather conditions start to shape the vintage to come. A warm spring preceded a warm, dry summer that set the stage for a promising outcome. The middle autumn period produced intermittent and lingering rains that cooled the season and slowed the red harvest. For Shiraz, this provided an extended ripening period, and thus complex fruit flavours.

The Madfish Shiraz shows the Southwestern version of the grape in classic, juicy style – fruit-forward, plush, and downright delicious!

When to drink and with what – Madfish Shiraz is released ready to drink, but will continue to develop over the next 5 years. A natural choice to pair with meats – try matching with spicy venison sausages, beef bourguignon or lamb moussaka.

The parcels of fruit were pressed to French and American oak barriques for 12 months maturation to encourage wine development and structural complexity. The use of French oak allowed for the integration of dusty savoury tannins, and the American oak introduced rich, toasted vanillin flavours.Cellaring: Will drink well now and will develop complex aging characters of rich earth, leather and forest floor over the next 5 years.SKU: MADFI06

MadFish Wines

“MadFish, produced by Howard Park Wines, are wines with an emphasis on enjoyment and drinkability. They are for people who enjoy the pleasures of life: family, friends, food and wine.
As the story suggests, the MadFish name is derived from the magnificent MadFish Bay near the Howard Park Great Southern winery. The traditional aboriginal water turtle design on the label is a symbol of perseverance and tolerance – no doubt characteristics displayed by the poor fish in MadFish Bay who are constantly under attack by their predators.”

Western Australia

This state is a relatively small contributor to the country’s grape plantings. However it does not stop the state being responsible for some of the finest wines coming out of Australia. This region clearly has a turning point in its wine producing status. Research reports from Californian viticulturalist Professor Harold Olmo, in the 1950s, and the Western Australian scientist Dr John Gladstone, in the 1960s, indicated that the more southern cooler regions of Western Australia where very well suited for production of world quality wines. Now these regions: Margaret River, Great Southern and Pemberton are the major wine producing regions of Western Australia. Margaret River region is now one of the premium regions of Australia and regarded along with Coonawarra and Yarra Valley as one of the three premium Cabernet Sauvignon areas in Australia.
