McWilliams 1877 Hilltops Shiraz

McWilliams 1877 Hilltops Shiraz – 97 points in Halliday

This prestigious wine takes its name, “1877”, from the year 1st generation winemaker, Samuel McWilliam, planted the winery’s first vines in Corowa NSW and McWilliam’s Wines was born. Crafted from vigorously selected, high quality fruit from mature, low yielding vines, the 2015 vintage of McWilliam’s “1877” is a Shiraz from some of the best vines in the Canberra wine growing district.

Vintage Conditions: 2015 was almost a perfect growing season, with a mild spring and summer and no extreme heat which allowed a long and even ripening period for fantastic flavour development. Shiraz from well managed vineyards escaped any damage or disease. Fruit remained clean throughout ripening and was picked at its optimum ripeness during mid to late march.
Colour: Bright purple red.
Aroma: Floral perfume with spicy red fruits and fresh toasty oak.
Palate: Medium bodied with bright acidity and fine slatey tannins. Perfumed floral red fruits with charcuterie and toasty oak complete the palate.
Vinification and Maturation: Hand picked at its optimum ripeness in the cool of the morning, the fruit was delivered to the winery and fermented with up to 50% whole clusters included. Cold soaked for five days before allowing the tank to gently warm up then inoculated with yeast. Hand plunged on skins for two weeks, the wine was gently pressed and racked to barrel for maturation over 10 months on fine lees with nil rackings. French oak was used with 35% new and the balance of one to four year old puncheons and hogsheads. The resulting wine was carefully blended in January then lightly fined prior to bottling.
Alcohol: 13.5% pH: 3.54 Acidity: 6.18 g/L
Peak Drinking: Drinking well now but will reward medium to long term.

McWilliam's Family Winemakers

“Few have helped shape the evolution of the Australian wine industry like McWilliam’s Wines. From humble beginnings on the outskirts of Corowa in 1877, the philosophy of putting quality of fruit first has ensured that McWilliam’s continues to be one of Australia’s most popular, respected and iconic wineries.
We believe that good wines are made by people, not corporations. With six consecutive generations of winemakers and over 135 years of experience, the wines we make are more than just quality, award-winning wines. They are wines that tell the story of our family and a century long love affair with winemaking. “

Canberra District

The Canberra District is a small but exciting wine region, full of boutique wineries and passionate winemakers. As a winegrowing region it dates back to the early 1970s, and today there are numerous wineries in the region. The climate is regarded as mild. The main wine styles: Red – Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet-Merlot, Shiraz; White – Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc.

flourish in a range of climates. In the warm to hot climates you can expect extremely intense aromatic, rich, full bodied wines, with hugh fruit (almost sweet) and chocolately tasting. In the more moderate/cooler climates you’re more likely to find structured Shiraz wines with black cherry, pepper and spice characters rather than the chocolate and fruit styles found in warmer climates.
