McWilliams Tumbarumba Chardonnay

The Single Vineyard range is site specific, showcasing individual style and personality, delivering wines of terrific nuance and detail. The McWilliam’s winemaking team continually strive for quality, pushing the benchmark for Australian winemaking to new heights.

The Single Vineyard Chardonnay displays clean fruit characters of grapefruit, green apple and white nectarine are lifted and given complexity with notes of fennel, some barrel-derived cashew nut and subtle struck-flint aromatics. Pristine, green citrus and melon fruit; built on a spine of mouthwatering acidity and wonderful texture. A wine of purity with intensity length and flavour.

Made from fruit grown along the cooler regions of the Great Divide Range, Tumburumba Chardonnay has a distinctive regional style showing white flowers, stone fruits, citrus and cashew nuts, with racy acidity, providing freshness and length.

The alpine location of the region provides a unique environment for vine growth in the ordinarily warm and flat Australian landscape. The elevation of the wine region reaches as high as 842m and the resulting crisp mountain air means that Tumbarumba is the coolest climate wine region in NSW, even receiving snow in the colder months. However there are also long hours of sunshine to counter the chill, producing an interestingly conflicted environment for vine growth. The extremities of these conditions can mean that vine growth is susceptible to damage in the colder months. However with good vine management and specific site selection the impact of these influences can be minimised and even harnessed for the benefit of flavour. The stature of the wines coming out of the region and the awards being bestowed on many of the McWilliam’s wines are testament to this.

McWilliam's Family Winemakers

“Few have helped shape the evolution of the Australian wine industry like McWilliam’s Wines. From humble beginnings on the outskirts of Corowa in 1877, the philosophy of putting quality of fruit first has ensured that McWilliam’s continues to be one of Australia’s most popular, respected and iconic wineries.
We believe that good wines are made by people, not corporations. With six consecutive generations of winemakers and over 135 years of experience, the wines we make are more than just quality, award-winning wines. They are wines that tell the story of our family and a century long love affair with winemaking. “

Tumbarumba is one of the newest wine regions, beginning in the early 1980s when Ian and Juliet (now Juliet Cullen) and Frank and Christine Minutello established vineyards. The mid 90s saw the region’s biggest expansion of vineyard development with nearly thirty vineyards producing grapes for sparkling and table wine. Cullen and Cowell sold their vineyard to Seppelt (now Southcorp). The climate is regarded as cool. The main wine styles: White – Sparkling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc; Red – Pinot Noir, Merlot.
