Onannon Chardonnay Mornington Peninsular

From 19 year old vines on a single vineyard in Tuerong, this is the third year Onannon have worked with Bill Williams and the team at Tambo Estate. Bill painstakingly sorted the fruit which was placed straight into a cool room as it was being picked and trucked back in the cool of the night to be processed straight away. The grapes were crushed and a little amount of whole bunches were thrown into the press, the juice settled overnight and then racked it to barrel. We played around with different levels of solids. A Combination of yeasts were used to help build some complexity. No MLF. 20% new French Oak. 10 months in the barrel.

Notes of nectarine, citrus, fennel, jasmine and almond nougat with a feathering of spice and burnt matches. Medium bodied with flavours of lime juice and white peach, the sweet nutty complexity adds to the flavour and texture. There’s a delicious limey acidity and a long tight finish with cedar and zest in the aftertaste. Magic.

Onannon Chardonnay Mornington Peninsular – a great wine from a relatively new but highly innovative producer.

Onannon is the venture of Sam Middleton, Kaspar Hermann and Will Byron, who donated the last two or three letters of their surnames to come up with Onannon. “Our aim is quite simply to make good wine.” A noble and modest mission statement from this Pinot Noir-focussed producer that also dabbles in single site Gippsland Chardonnay, Mornington Peninsula Pinot Gris and Yarra Valley Rosé. Onannon is the venture of three friends who started small and are still small, but now they make 1,000 cases a year rather than the 80 they produced in 2008. They make wine with a ‘garage’ philosophy, backed up by quality fruit and shared winemaking experience. The wine is made in a small purpose built winery on the Mornington Peninsula, and the approach is as hands-on now as it was on day one.
