Stump Jump Riesling/Marsanne/Sauvignon

Stump Jump Riesling/Marsanne/Sauvignon

Stump Jump Riesling/Marsanne/Sauvignon

This is a fresh, lively medium dry white wine on the palate and already shows a lovely viscous character, then the nuttiness of the Marsanne, while the finish is dominated by the slight talc and sweetness of the Sauvignon Blanc. These flavours are balanced by integrated acidity that doesn’t interfere with the fruit or flavours.

All of the varieties in this blend shine through and contribute to this complex and well-built wine. Lifted fresh cut grass and snap pea aromatics hint at Sauvignon Blanc with lemon and lime sherbet from the Riesling exploding from the glass. The Rhone varieties play lightly on the nose with tropical flowers, fresh pineapple, dry hay, and candied ginger peeking through. The palate shows red apple skins, ripe pear, and white peach with some pithy grapefruit texture, all balanced by some nutty creamy notes. A welcoming hint of the candied ginger returns and lingers on a long, fresh, and vibrant finish. The wine begins with loads of fruit which carries through the palate to a long satisfying finish held tightly poised by a fine and long acid line. This is a seriously enjoyable wine and is the perfect aperitif or accompaniment to summer meals.

The 2016 Vintage started a few days earlier than ever before due to the dry conditions, but relieving rains arrived in late January/ early February, reducing stress for the final stages of ripening. The earlier harvested fruit achieved fruit ripeness at relatively low Baumes due to the rain event. These wines are bright, spicy and vibrant with a lovely long acid and elegance. As vintage progressed the concentration grew and the colour intensified, resulting in more weighty wines without overripe characters.

Stump Jump Riesling/Marsanne/Sauvignon – Another great wine from the d’Arenberg dynasty

Tim Adams Fairfield Block Semillon

Tim Adams Fairfield Block Semillon

Tim Adams Fairfield Block Semillon

This aromatic wine has great balance and generous flavour typical of this variety grown in the Clare Valley.
Fermentation in new French oak has added complexity to the grassy and plush stone fruit characters of the Semillon.
The palate is textural and rich thanks to extended lees contact, without residual sweetness and has a long lingering finish.
It has diverse food compatibility—in particular with seafood and pasta and may be cellared for a decade with confidence.

Shaw + Smith Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc

Shaw + Smith Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc

Shaw + Smith Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc – A benchmark wine for Australian Sauvignon Blanc. The Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc is unwooded to maximise its varietal character. The aroma shows restrained Sauvignon grassiness coupled with riper fruit characters. The palate is young and lively with attractive varietal flavours and refreshing acidity. A lean yet flavoursome wine.

A great aperitif or serve with seafood
Best drinking within two years
Ideal serving temperature: 6-8°C
Produced using sustainable practices

Typically it shows a pink grapefruit character, concentration and mid-palate texture, which reflect the carefully selected sites and hand harvesting during the small window of perfect ripeness. 2018 was a standout year. The growing season weather behaved well overall, giving us well-balanced acidity and good flavour development in the pink grapefuit, lavender spectrum.

From our estate vineyards at Balhannah and Lenswood, complemented by fruit from a small number of highly valued growers. Hand picked. Cool fermentation in stainless steel followed by maturation on lees. Early bottling to retain freshness. Outstanding quality from a growing season that threatened, at times, to be tricky. After some heat in January, the moderate, dry and sunny months of February and March delivered beautifully balanced fruit. Crop levels were slightly below average, enhancing flavour and intensity.

Rated 96 points by James Halliday.

Shaw + Smith’s Balhannah Vineyard (35 hectares of vineyard) is planted predominantly to Sauvignon Blanc and close-planted Shiraz on property surrounding the winery at 340 – 380m elevation. The soil is free draining sandy loam over red clay with underlying quartzite and shale, with varying amounts of ironstone pebbles.

Decanter says “From high elevation vineyards, where yields are kept down and the grapes are hand-picked. This features crisply-scented lemon and bell pepper aromas with a hint of apricot. It’s really well balanced in the mouth, the succulent but saline citrus fruit backed up by richer hints of stone fruit and tangerine, alongside a layer of wafting herbs. Very elegant. “

The Other Wine Co. is a new venture that aims to make wines from the right grape, grown in the right place. That may sound obvious, but it’s a principle honoured more “in the breach than the observance.” Really good matches of variety and place take a long time to become entrenched, but when they do, the proof is in the glass.
The first two wines from The Other Wine Co. are classic matches of region and variety. Grenache from McLaren Vale has often been overshadowed by Shiraz and even Cabernet Sauvignon, but in the last decade it has become more and more clear that Grenache is the gem of the vale. The old bush vines, grown without irrigation, that are in their prime for making great Grenache are, in our view, among the viticultural treasures of Australia.
Pinot Gris, like Grenache, can be and has been under-valued at times in Australia. It has often been grown in warm climates, cropped too high, and made without much ambition. But it’s worth remembering that Pinot Gris is Pinot Noir’s white twin, genetically the same, but a very different personality. In the high-altitude, high-rainfall hills to the east of Adelaide, Gris is perfectly placed to perform, and to give wines of texture that retain freshness and character.
The Other Wine Co. wines are vinified and bottled at the Shaw + Smith winery in Balhannah. The wines are ‘other’ because they give the winemakers the opportunity to make wines from varieties and/or regions that fall outside of Shaw + Smith’s rigorous definition. Stylistically, the wines avoid over-ripeness, oak and power in preference to freshness, balance and overall drinkability. These are made to drink and enjoy. That’s it!

Tamar Ridge Devils Corner Sauvignon Blanc

Devils Corner Sauvignon Blanc

Devils Corner Sauvignon Blanc

Pronounced aromas of fresh cut grass with a wash of zesty lemons and a drizzle of asparagus. The fresh cut grass flows through to the palate with a hint of leafy green herbs. Overall a wine that is bursting with gentle mouthfilling fruit flavours while leading to a finish that is crisp and refreshing.

To produce Devils Corner Sauvignon Blanc grapes are sourced from vineyards located in Tasmania’s Tamar Valley and the East Coast of the island. This multi-vineyard approach allows focus on the strengths of each location and produce a more consistent, crisp and fresh Sauvignon Blanc. The bouquet displays grassiness, asparagus and tomato bush leaf. This is interwoven with hints of passionfruit and citrus. The passionfruit flows through to the palate with delicate fruit sweetness and crisp acidity. Overall a wine that is bursting with flavour while leading to a finish that is crisp and refreshing. Try with any seafood (especially calamari and fried whitebait) or char-grilled asparagus drizzled with olive oil and a really good shaved aged parmesan cheese; or an Asian-inspired seafood salad; or just enjoy it on its own.

The name of the winery comes from the fact that intrepid sailors navigating Tasmania’s Tamar River discovered a treacherous bend and named it Devil’s Corner.
