d’Arenberg 6 pack – a fabulous case of the best wines, not a body description.

One of the most significant wineries in McLaren Vale, d’Arenberg was established in 1912 when Joseph Osborn, a teetotaler and director of Thomas Hardy and Sons, sold his stable of prize winning horses to purchase the property that now houses the winery, cellar door and d’Arry’s Verandah Restaurant.

Joseph’s son Frank joined him on the land and they set about acquiring some more vineyards. Joseph Osborn died in 1921 leaving full control of the business to Frank.

In the early years grapes were sold to other wineries before the winery was built in 1927 shortly after Francis (universally known as d’Arry) Osborn was born.

Initially making fortified wines to export to England, the business prospered until World War II stifled demand. This coincided with Frank’s ill health which forced d’Arry to leave school in 1943 at age 16 to help his father run the business and work the land.

d’Arry took full control of the business in 1957 upon Frank’s death and in 1959 he launched his own wine label named in honour of his mother, Helena d’Arenberg, who died shortly after giving birth to him. d’Arry decided to put a red stripe on the label, inspired by happy memories of his school days at Prince Alfred College, where he wore the crimson-and-white striped school tie.

d’Arry’s son Chester joined the business in 1984 as Chief Winemaker and makes distinctive wines using traditional methods both in the vineyard and the winery.

d'Arry's Original Shiraz Grenache by d'Arenberg

d’Arry’s Original Shiraz Grenache from d’Arenberg, another legendary australian wine.

A classic blend of spicy, red berried Shiraz with juicy, fragrant Grenache.

Originally known as Burgundy this wine was made in honour of d’Arenberg principal, Francis ‘d’Arry’ d’Arenberg Osborn. It is the culmination of more than half a century d’Arry’s winemaking career at his family winery in McLaren Vale. d’Arry’s original blend, first launched some four decades ago, was as is it appears today- a blend of Shiraz and Grenache grown on d’Arenberg’s low yielding, 19th century vineyards. The d’Arry’s Original has enjoyed huge success at shows through the years and has been fundamental in building the reputation of d’Arenberg.

A winemaker’s favourite. Year in, year out this traditional Shiraz Grenache blend continues to deliver beyond expectation. 2015 is no exception. Depth of character on the nose is a feature with each subsequent sniff revealing something new. Dark, earthy Shiraz notes, complimented perfectly by fruit driven, pure Grenache. The palate is equally rewarding. Rich and powerful, but not in an overbearing way. The blend of the chunkier Shiraz tannins, interwoven with the more spritely Grenache tannins enhances the texture of the wine. Flavours seem to flow infinitely on the palate and acidity is on point. This wine will definitely benefit from decanting whilst young, but don’t be afraid to let it age a few years yet in a well-conditioned cellar.

Small batches of grapes are gently crushed and then transferred to five tonne headed down open fermenters. These batches remain separate until final blending. Foot treading is undertaken two thirds of the way through fermentation. The wine is then basket pressed and transferred to a mixture of new and used French and old American oak barriques to complete fermentation. The barrel ferments are aged on lees, and there is no racking until final blending. This wine does not undertake fining or filtration prior to bottling.

The d’Arrys Original is a crowd favourite for more than sentimental reasons.

Olive Grove Chardonnay by d'Arenberg

Olive Grove Chardonnay by d’Arenberg

Olive Grove Chardonnay ticks so many boxes. Richness and generosity of fruit from the McLaren Vale component. Think ripe yellow peach, quince and melons. The Adelaide Hills fruit offers up crisp Granny Smith apples and oyster shell notes whilst delivering finesse and length to the mouthfeel. Deftly handled French oak ties it all in together, adding texture and complexity along with subtle hints of spice, roasted nuts and brioche. The complete package, drinking well in youth but with the promise of more to come.

The wine’s name comes from the many olive trees around the vineyard. Since European settlement in the 1840’s, olive trees have thrived in McLaren Vale. They are alongside roads, in gardens and occasionally, in the middle of our Chardonnay vineyards blocking our harvester!

Small batches of grapes are gently crushed, chilled, and then basket pressed. To add complexity and mouthfeel the wine is fermented and matured in a mixture of French and American oak for seven months.

A healthy winter and plenty of spring rains set the vines up very well. Bud burst was on time, but very cool for the first part of spring. Shoots grew to 5 or 6 inches long and then stopped for a month. Flowering was quite late, by three weeks, which meant a late start to harvest, and long, slow ripening periods. The summer rains stopped in mid-January, so disease pressure was low. It was very dry from February to April, with only a few millimetres of rain. Days were mild with a lot of cool nights, the first few weeks of April was around two degrees hotter than usual, which help that last bits of fruit to ripen. Overall, a great vintage with minimal disease pressure and above average crop levels.

Derelict Vineyard Grenache by d'Arenberg

d’Arenberg Derelict Vineyard Grenache – Some years ago, chief winemaker Chester Osborn, sought out additional super premium Grenache fruit from McLaren Vale to meet the high demand for d’Arenberg’s Grenache-based wines. Many very old vineyards showed promise but had not been used for grape production for decades. Long bracken ferns and native grasses were taking over and the vines themselves resembled Medusa’s hair – wild, struggling and gnarled. This was the inspiration in the naming of this wine. Taming and rejuvenation of these vineyards has patiently occurred over several years although some vines still look rather hard-done-by and only produce very low yields of exceptional quality.

The grapes are trodden by foot and basket pressed and the wine aged in French barrels to produce a great grenache wine.

The nose, as would be expected in a cooler year, is teeming with red fruits and florals. Raspberry and cherry with a hint rose and violet. The true giveaways to the vintage however, lie in the distinct white pepper and spice notes . The palate follows suit with bright red fruit and spice. This is not a particularly fleshy Grenache but the flavours remain concentrated and are driven along by a wave of vibrant acidity and minerally tannins. Different subtleties of flavour become apparent on the lengthy finish. This all leads to a wine that is pretty and refined but with an underlying sense of muscle.

d'Arenberg The Noble Wrinkled Riesling

d’Arenberg The Noble Wrinkled Riesling is a true Australian “sweetie”, a favourite down under and well loved over here in the UK.

Botrytis Cinerea, affectionately known as “Noble Rot”, weakens the grape skins allowing moisture to evapourate which results in sweet, concentrated flavours. These shrivelled berries are basket pressed before a long fermentation, resulting in a luscious wine with intense richness and viscosity. Grapes affected with Botrytis are small and wrinkly, inspiring the name of this wine, which was originally released in 1985 as The Noble Riesling.

The Vintage

A wet winter ensured good sub soil moisture and set up the vines well with healthy canopies. Spring was very dry with above average temperatures, a heavy downpour in January was a welcome relief. Mild conditions during the ripening period produced wines that show an abundance of spicy fruits with great colour and richness. Vintage started on 30 January, the earliest start on record by one day.

The Characteristics

Generous and decadent but zesty and fresh at the same time. Ripples of fresh lemon and lime, a whisper of candied ginger and a healthy dollop of honey and barley sugar. The palate is initially sweet and viscous but this opulence is countered by a tangy acidity that flashes through the core of the wine in dart like fashion. The combination of flavour and acidity linger almost eternally. In its youth this wine is crisp and provides versatility when matching to a wide range of desserts. It works particularly well with elements containing fresh tropical fruits. As it ages it will take on a deeper colour and the flavour will develop further into the dried fruit spectrum making it a sensational match to strong cheeses.

The Broken Fishplate Sauvignon Blanc by d’Arenberg

Despite being a good match for fish, the name has nothing to do with them! A fishplate is a term for the metal plates that collect grape bunches on a harvester, and often break when navigating around the steep, windy vineyards.

An incredibly intense aromatic display of lifted gooseberry, kaffir lime, and freshly cut pineapple entices you to keep your nose in the glass where subtle hints of crushed lemongrass, and just-snapped snow pea also start to emerge. This symphony of aromatics literally leaps out of the glass at you. The mouth-watering palate is driven by tropical fruit characters which dance in step with an extreme linear acidity that keeps all of those heady flavours in balance, wrapped tightly together on a long and fine finish. Enjoy this wine chilled, in its youth, with intensely flavoured Asian spiced dishes. Or simply open a bottle anytime you want to feel summery.

The fruit for this wine is sourced from the cool climate Adelaide Hills. Small batches of grapes are gently crushed, chilled, and then transferred to stainless steel basket presses. Gentle extraction of the juice is critical in these early stages to retain the delicate fruit characters. To add complexity and mouthfeel, a small percentage of the wine is partially fermented in aged French oak for two to three weeks.
