Stump Jump Riesling/Marsanne/Sauvignon

Stump Jump Riesling/Marsanne/Sauvignon

This is a fresh, lively medium dry white wine on the palate and already shows a lovely viscous character, then the nuttiness of the Marsanne, while the finish is dominated by the slight talc and sweetness of the Sauvignon Blanc. These flavours are balanced by integrated acidity that doesn’t interfere with the fruit or flavours.

All of the varieties in this blend shine through and contribute to this complex and well-built wine. Lifted fresh cut grass and snap pea aromatics hint at Sauvignon Blanc with lemon and lime sherbet from the Riesling exploding from the glass. The Rhone varieties play lightly on the nose with tropical flowers, fresh pineapple, dry hay, and candied ginger peeking through. The palate shows red apple skins, ripe pear, and white peach with some pithy grapefruit texture, all balanced by some nutty creamy notes. A welcoming hint of the candied ginger returns and lingers on a long, fresh, and vibrant finish. The wine begins with loads of fruit which carries through the palate to a long satisfying finish held tightly poised by a fine and long acid line. This is a seriously enjoyable wine and is the perfect aperitif or accompaniment to summer meals.

The 2016 Vintage started a few days earlier than ever before due to the dry conditions, but relieving rains arrived in late January/ early February, reducing stress for the final stages of ripening. The earlier harvested fruit achieved fruit ripeness at relatively low Baumes due to the rain event. These wines are bright, spicy and vibrant with a lovely long acid and elegance. As vintage progressed the concentration grew and the colour intensified, resulting in more weighty wines without overripe characters.

Stump Jump Riesling/Marsanne/Sauvignon – Another great wine from the d’Arenberg dynasty

Stump Jump GSM by d'Arenberg

Stump Jump GSM by d’Arenberg.

It is rumoured that the inventor of the Stump Jump plough, which enabled a ploughshare to jump over tree roots, had poor eyesight and required regular tests to ensure he could still operate machinery. The design of this label is inspired by an optometrist’s eyechart and serves as a makeshift sobriety test. If you can hold the bottle at arm’s length and still read the front label, you can enjoy another glass.

A wine whose price tag belies its complexity and structure. From raspberry and rhubarb to cedar and soot. Aromas jump unimpeded from the glass. The medium weighted palate is similarly expressive, its impressive array of fruit given lift and vibrancy by an equally scintillating line of acidity. Towards the finish, chalky tannins sweep across the tongue, adding savouriness and crunch. Bright Grenache, earthy Shiraz and spicy Mourvedre marry harmoniously in this ever popular GSM.

A warm and dry spring and summer followed by further dry conditions throughout harvest meant a number of things. Firstly disease pressure was negligible, the vast majority of fruit being very clean. Secondly yields were down. Finally ripening happened relatively quickly. From a quality perspective in regards to reds, these conditions produced wines of incredible colour and flavour. Dark, brooding wines with great volumes of fruit and layers of chewy, velvety tannin structure. Big, concentrated wines but beautifully balanced.

The grapes used in this wine are mostly from very old bush vines, and underwent gentle crushing, traditional open tank fermentation, basket pressing and oak maturation prior to bottling.

Stump Jump Lightly Wooded Chardonnay by d'Arenberg

Stump Jump Lightly Wooded Chardonnay by d’Arenberg

Very aromatic to start, lifted citrus blossom mix with white peaches and nectarines. Fresh and zesty on the palate, the oak lends support and gives a lovely creamy mouthfeel with texture and spice.

The name ‘Stump Jump’ pays homage to a significant South Australian invention – the Stump Jump plough. As well as clearing the land around McLaren Vale, it was adopted worldwide in the late 19th century because of its ability to ride over stumps and gnarled roots, saving faremers valuable time and energy. The design of this label is inspired by an optomertist’s eyechart and serves as a makeshift sobriety test. If you can hold the bottle at arm’s length and still read the front lablel, you can enjoy another glass.

Fresh crunchy Chardonnay, full of Granny Smith apple, a squeeze of citrus and a slight brininess that becomes more evident on the palate. Prudent use of well-seasoned French oak adds discreet hazelnut an brioche notes to the mix. The mid palate continues to develop a slight creaminess but the finish remains taught, savoury and long.

A fruit driven yet refreshing Chardonnay. Loads of stonefruit, pear drop, florals and tropical notes. The palate is sleak and long but with enough generosity to round out any harsh edges. A touch of spice and woodiness is added from the subtle use of old French oak, no chariness or sweet coconut character mind you. Clean and fresh and immensely slurpable.

The grapes used in this wine underwent gentle crushing, temperature controlled fermentation and basket pressing prior to bottling.

Stump Jump Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot

d’Arenberg Stump Jump Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot – Fresh and juicy, ripe red fruits mix with plums, blackcurrant, flowers and a twist of black pepper. The tannins are fine with their trademark earthiness helping keep this easy going wine in check.

The design of this label is inspired by an optometrist’s eyechart and serves as a makeshift sobriety test. The nose and palate are brimming with purple fruits of cassis, mulberry and violets along with subtle herbal notes of red capsicum and mint. There is a nice cedary edge to the wine adding savouriness and complexity. The mouthfeel is sleek and is structured with the purple fruits enveloped in a layer of fine, chalky tannins ensuring the flavours don’t overwhelm the palate with sweetness but rather taper into a long and rewarding finish.

The grapes used in this wine are mostly from very old bush vines, and underwent gentle crushing, traditional open tank fermentation, basket pressing and oak maturation prior to bottling.

A wine showing signs of both maturity and youth. Youthful, juicy, mulberry and blackcurrant notes are slowly turn to wonderfully mature and smooth flavours of sweet, juicy, baked fruits, fresh leather and woody spice. A lovely line of acid runs through the palate bringing freshness and life, combining with the slowly softening tannins to add focus and length. This wine will promises to continue drinking well for another two or three years, possible more with good cellaring conditions. More rewarding than its price would suggest. Enjoy!

Stump Jump Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot is an entry level product in the d’Arenberg wines, but still retains the quality of this premier winery.

Stump Jump Sauvignon Blanc

Stump Jump Sauvignon Blanc

Clean, fresh and full of passionfruit, with lychee and gooseberries that dance across the palate.

Name It is rumoured that the inventor of the Stump Jump plough, which enabled a ploughshare to jump over tree roots, had poor eyesight and required regular tests to ensure he could still operate machinery. The Winemaking -The grapes used in this wine underwent gentle crushing, temperature controlled fermentation and basket pressing prior to bottling.
The Vintage – Quite a wet winter with July, August and September being way above average in rainfall. October, November and December were a little below average and January, February and March were more or less bone dry. Temperatures were mild until late January, so vines seemed to be delayed and harvest appeared like it was again going to be late. However, a few hot days and nights brought the ripening forward with slight sacrifice of acidity. The above average temperatures of February and March and the dryness made everything ripen relatively quickly. Yields appeared on the lighter side, because the heat and dry conditions did reduce them significantly, however they were still quite respectable across all varieties.
The Wine – Strongly aromatic, with cut grass, tropical fruit and snow peas. The palate is bright and fresh, with zingy stone fruit and citrus. Simple yet refreshing, this wine should be chilled and slurped in summer.

Stump Jump Shiraz

d'Arenberg Stump Jump Shiraz

Stump Jump Shiraz – a staple from the iconic d’Arenberg Winery.

This is a very approachable and fun wine. The lifted nose is a cacophony of aromatic intrigue. Lifted red fruits are chased down by dark berry aromatics which then yield to typical baking spice and cracked pepper characters shared by all good McLaren Vale Shiraz. It’s almost like a race to the finish for these competing characters all vying for the lead role. Yet they also support and complement one another. It is on the palate that the value of this wine can be truly appreciated though. Generous fruit weight supports a fine tannin profile characteristics that would make this wine sit proudly amongst those many times its price. Black olive skin, earthy notes, and a subtle touch of graphite and iron round out the full palate. This wine has a welcome plushness to it, yet sits lightly on the tongue, its tannin and long acid line giving it a lively and playful feel. Have fun enjoying this wine. That’s what it is asking you to do.

Fresh and juicy, ripe red fruits mix with plums, blackcurrant, flowers and a twist of black pepper. The tannins are fine with their trademark earthiness helping keep this easy going Stump Jump Shiraz in check.
