Rolf Binder Halliwell Shiraz/Grenache

Rolf Binder Halliwell Shiraz/Grenache

In Halliwell, Shiraz is masterfully blended with the other ‘Old Barossan’ – Grenache. The two varieties each bring their own enchantments to the wine: great structure and savoury black fruits and spice from the Shiraz and a bouquet and lift from the Grenache, culminating in a luscious mouth-filling finish and velvety palate

Vintage conditions
The 2017 vintage wrapped-up four to six weeks later than the ‘new normal’ of the past decade, the growing season started after a long wet winter and one of the wettest Septembers on record. 2017 promises to deliver an exciting array of wine styles, from ‘bright, aromatic wines’, through to ‘vibrant, intense, well-structured’ and ‘dense, concentrated’ wines from the Barossa’s many diverse sites.
Vinification details
Made with 65% Shiraz and 35% Grenache, the fruit for the Halliwell is hand and machine harvested. The wine comprises seven batches of grapes that are separately crushed, fermented and barrel aged until bottling. The crush is fermented in 8 tonne open fermenters. The fermentation was completed in tank, the wines were then racked to barrel. Oak used for the Shiraz was a combination of new, shaven and seasoned American. For the Grenache, predominantely seasoned French with an addition of some shaven American oak barrels. The wine was blended to style, utilising the strength of both the Shiraz and the Grenache.

Christa and Rolf form the heart of Rolf Binder wines, continuing a family wine-making tradition that spans nearly 60 years. Their parents arrived in Australia in 1950 – just two amongst the many post-war immigrants from Europe – and met a grape grower in the Barossa while working to help pay for their assisted passage. From such unlikely beginnings, a passion for the Barossa was born, a winery was purchased and a new life began. They soon came to appreciate the riches of the Barossa, the old vine Shiraz, Mataro and Grenache, and were at the forefront of many old vine varietal blends. Now Christa and Rolf are taking the winery into the 21st century, with Rolf forging a world-wide reputation for his red wines while Christa takes the plaudits for her white wines.

South Australia

South Australia is the largest wine producing state of Australia. It may be surprising to most that the Riverland region is the state’s largest grape producing area. The Barossa Valley is famed for its full-bodied, rich, ripe and generous reds. The Coonawarra is internationally renowned for its Cabernet Sauvignon (and prized ‘terra rossa’ soils). Padthaway, McLaren Vale, and the Clare Valley all make major contributions, and the importance of the Adelaide Hills is rapidly increasing.
