Tar & Roses Sangiovese Heathcote

Tar & Roses Sangiovese Heathcote

Tar & Roses Sangiovese Heathcote

Lifted mulberry characters with dusty earth and spice with fine tannins, crunchy acidity and a hint of spice. It’s a red wine made for food.

The fruit was machine harvested into 2.5t steel bins, transported directly to the winery for immediate processing, then crushed in static fermenters and pumped over twice a day for approximately 20 minutes each time. The temperature and acid levels were monitored constantly and adjusted as necessary. After completing fermentation, the wine was pressed to tank using an air bag press. It was racked off gross lees to barrel for maturation in mainly older used barriques. The barrels were checked and topped each month.

Sangiovese is a thin-skinned variety like Nebbiolo, known for its herbal & spice notes more than its fruity notes. It has an attractive mid red colour and is characterised by high levels of tannin, well balanced by acid. It is suited to well drained soils with abundant sunlight, both of which the Heathcote vineyard provides.

Fine substantial tannins and crunchy acidity sit well with the sour cherry fruit flavours. Medium bodied with dried herbs on the palate and a long finish.

It’s the little things that make the difference… the care and continued maintenance of the wines during maturation, the constant monitoring of temperature and acid levels during ferment plus the use of quality fruit at the outset combine to ensure a quality wine result. We want to produce wines that have individual flair and are distinctly varietal and reflective of their terroir as grown here in Australia.

Inspired by Mediterranean grape varietals, the range stretches from the delicious viscous Pinot Grigio to the complex tannic Nebbiolo.

Tar & Roses

Tar & Roses reflects the multi-regions of Spain, Italy and Australia, as well as traditional winemaking alongside the new. All Tar & Roses wines are lovingly made using fruit grown in Heathcote, Strathbogie Ranges, King Valley and Priorat, Spain.

Victoria

The modern day development of viticulture in this region is believed to have commenced in the mid 1950s, when Paul Osicka planted his Major’s Creek vineyard. In the 1970s further vineyards were planted; Red Hill (now Red Edge), McIvor Creek, Mount Ida, Jasper Hill, Wild Duck Creek. This region is now the home to some big hitters in Australian Shiraz. The climate is regarded as temperate with cooling southerly winds. The major wine styles: Reds – Shiraz, typically full-bodied, ripe yet supple, with tastes including chocolate, berries, and traces of eucalypt.

Sangiovese

The leading grape variety of Italy. These wines tend to be relatively high in acidity. A youthfull wine is likely to display strong black berry and faint floral aromas, and rich spicy berry flavours with firm tannins. As it ages it will probably display sweet spice and licorice, meaty game, white pepper, earth characteristics.
