Three Lions Great Southern Chardonnay

The Plantagenet’s were the first truly armigerous royal dynasty of England meaning they were entitled to strike and bear various coats of arms. The arms of this noble, later royal, family, Gules, three lions passant guardant, termed colloquially “the arms of England” were first adopted by King Richard the Lionheart (1189–1199), son of King Henry II of England (1154–1189), son of Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of Anjou (1113/17–1151).
These Three Lions signified royalty, history, power and a code of conduct that was instantly recognized wherever they were displayed.

The rich tapestry of the Plantagenet story begins in 1968, when English migrant Tony Smith envisaged great things for his land in Mount Barker. With his small inheritance, he bought a farm called Bouverie in the Plantagenet Shire and literally planted the seeds of the Plantagenet future – Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes bore the fruit of what would become some of the most highly awarded and sought after wines, both nationally and internationally. The fruit was picked in 1974 and the wines showed exciting potential, enough for Smith to convert a local apple packing shed into a winery and get to work making tight and lean Shiraz with typical regional spiciness and full-bodied cabernet. Embracing the conditions of the Great Southern’s cool climate, Smith went on to plant further varieties, including Riesling, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The vineyards all benefit from their coastal proximity, enjoying abundant rainfall and cool twilight breezes from the neighbouring Southern Ocean.

Vasse Felix Filius Chardonnay – A modern Australian, softly textured Chardonnay. This distinct Vasse Felix style embraces the fruit with a focus on natural acidity. A selection of premium fruit is fermented in individual parcels with wild yeasts and some solids in the juice and maturated in French oak barriques for nine months.

Vasse Felix Chardonnay is typified by its bright, elegant fruit, subtle wild complexities and a tight acid structure, reflecting the vibrancy and purity of this variety in Margaret River. ‘Filius’ translates to ‘son of’ in Latin, reflecting the relationship between this wine and its premier ‘father’.

‘Son of’ the Vasse Felix Chardonnay. This is a modern, pure and vibrant style, with elegant fruit, wild complexities and mouthwatering natural acidity, crafted from fruit sourced from each of the Vasse Felix vineyards.

APPEARANCE Bright pale straw with a green tinge.
NOSE A delicate perfume of lemon cheesecake, panna cotta, a touch of pawpaw, light herbal coriander and lemon verbena notes, is supported by the underlying aroma of limestone and hazelnuts.
PALATE Light yet fleshy with lovely bright acidity, the palate carries to a crunchy, chalky finish with hints of green pawpaw, white peach and custard tart.
WINEMAKER COMMENTS
The Filius Chardonnay is crafted from our lighter weight, pretty, fruitdriven Chardonnay sections. These selections are best handled with judicious oak and lighter solids in fermentation, producing a perfectly balanced, complex and fine Chardonnay with a clean bright palate.
All parcels were treated in respect of the unique characters of our four vineyard sites. Natural fermentation with varying solids levels, fine French oak and battonage programs were tailored to each individual batch. Following 8 months of maturation in oak, the parcels were combined to create a vibrant, elegant and complex Margaret River Chardonnay in the distinct Estate style.

Three Lions Great Southern Sauvignon Blanc – Tropical and stone fruit aromas lead into a full flavoured and balanced palate, featuring white peach, lemon and pink grapefruit. A great example of cool climate Sauvignon Blanc that finishes crisp, with good citrus, stonefruit, and river pebble minerality lingering.

Three Lions Great Southern Pinot Noir

Three Lions Pinot Noir is deep ruby red in colour. On the nose, there are lifted aromas of red cherry, raspberries and a savoury complexity that leads into a palate bursting with bramble fruits and toasty oak. This Pinot Noir is beautifully textured with fine tannins and balanced acidity.

Plantagenet’s total 126 hectares of vineyard have been carved out of the region’s distinctive Marri soils named after the massive native Marri, or Red Gum trees that grow here. The soils are gravelly loams with good drainage over a base of clay, sand or the ironstone rock, ensuring that the vines are not over-watered or over-fertilised, thus allowing for optimal fruit concentration.
The climate is cool-temperate and strongly influenced by the proximity of the Southern Ocean. Rainfall is plentiful and even during the hottest Australian summer, daytime temperatures are moderated by cooling evening sea breezes. The warm days and cool nights of the Great Southern allow maximum retention of the varietal flavours and aromas required for complex wines.
The combination of these ancient soils and cool maritime climate offers an environment perfect for growing premium wine grapes and making wines that are expressive of the place from which they come.
