“Grosset Wines is an independently owned winery set in the Clare Valley producing just six highly regarded premium wines each vintage.
The first vintage was in 1981, after which Jeff Grosset has almost single-handedly been responsible for the renaissance of Clare Riesling. His Polish Hill Riesling, one of the world’s great examples of this variety, stands out as Australia’s finest Riesling.”
Vineyards were first established in the mid 1800s. Some of the early winery names, Wendouree, Knappstein and Quelltaler are still in the region. Nowadays there is a mix of very large companies and a significant number of boutique wineries. The climate is regarded as warm, but there are variations due to altitude. The main wine styles: White – Riesling, Semillon, Chardonnay; Red – Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Alea (pronounced ey-lee-uh) vineyard, is named for the Greek goddess of wisdom and courage, Athena Alea. The vineyard is situated at Watervale`s highest elevation, where the soil is poorer and tougher than that at the adjacent ‘Springvale’ vineyard. The low yields are vital to allow for full ripening at high acidity which Jeff Grosset is convinced is the key to success with the off-dry style.
