Lioness of McLaren Vale

Lioness of McLaren Vale Shiraz

Lioness of McLaren Vale Shiraz

Lioness of McLaren Vale is sourced from Angus and Helen Tuck’s vineyard located in the subregion of Bakers Gully. Here mature Shiraz vines populate or perish, in the ironstone pebble laden clay loam, over ancient Kurrajong Formation geology, a silica cemented conglomerate most suited to grow Shiraz.

After hand picking whole bunches of our Lioness of McLaren Vale in mid-March our winemaker Elena Brooks let the whole bunches ferment together in open top fermenters with ambient yeasts and hand plunging for 12 days, before basket pressing into some new (20%) but predominately older French Oak barriques, to the mature for a further 18 months in the same oak, before bottling without fining or filtration to capture the essence of the vineyard. Although ready to drink the Lioness of McLaren Vale will also reward cellaring and decanting.

Tasting Notes
Colour
Purple, velvet, grainy and welcoming.
Nose
A strong aromatic McLaren Vale shiraz identity: violets, roses, blackberry, and white chocolate freshly grated. Plummy, with macerated blueberries and a hint of Christmas Cake’s bouquet.
Palate
A rounded, fruity yet structured and ordered savoury mouthful of giving red wine. Flavours of freshly picked dark berries and dark berry jams. And there’s a deftness to the flavour, too – something akin to Summer Pudding’s
lift and bounce. These flavours are held taut by acid’s line and tannin length. McLaren Vale in excelsius.
Drink
We dare you to be bold with this red: Barbecued Barramundi (or a similar esturinal fish) with Special Fried Rice. Or we dare you not: Grilled Trout with Gratin Dauphinois and a Watercress Salad.

Dandelion Vineyards

Dandelion Vineyards are proven plantings that have stood the test of time. We grow our own grapes and source from the best of family vineyards. Our wish is to nurture the unique character of these vineyards and express their terroir in our wines.
We believe that to capture variety, vintage and vineyard requires an enlightened approach. Separating single sites, and even single soil types, vine by vine if need be.
Five Red Star Winery: James Halliday Australian Wine Companion
“This is a highly impressive partnership… It brings together vineyards spread across the Adelaide Hills, Eden Valley, Langhorne Creek, McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Fleurieu Peninsula. Elena is not only the beautiful wife of industry dilettante Zar Brooks, but also an exceptionally gifted winemaker

South Australia

The McLaren Vale is predominately a red wine region, producing some of the best red wines in South Australia. Vineyards were first planted in the mid 1800s. One of the early pioneers Thomas Hardy established a business that evolved to BRL Hardy, one of the largest wine companies in the country. The region also has a healthy number of boutique wineries that consistently make fine wines and experiment with different wine styles. The climate is warm to hot with dry summers, and benefits from cooling breezes from the St Vincent Gulf. The main wine styles: Red – Shiraz (rich, ripe & generous), Cabernet Sauvignon; White – Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc.

Shiraz

flourish in a range of climates. In the warm to hot climates you can expect extremely intense aromatic, rich, full bodied wines, with hugh fruit (almost sweet) and chocolately tasting. In the more moderate/cooler climates you’re more likely to find structured Shiraz wines with black cherry, pepper and spice characters rather than the chocolate and fruit styles found in warmer climates.
