Pimpala Road Chardonnay

THE NAME
“Our fun little on-premise exclusive label, Pimpala Road is the location of our home, the historic Mount Hurtle winery.” – Geoff Merrill

VINTAGE INFORMATION McLaren Vale had one of the earliest vintages on record this year, with mild weather playing an important role for the region; rainfall was lower than average and with dry conditions from early August meant supplementary irrigation was vital. With only a few sporadic hot days, the weather allowed natural acids with low pH levels to develop. Yields had fallen just below average, however this varied depending on variety. Overall 2015 was a successful vintage; we have excellent examples at the winery of all varieties made.

WINEMAKERS NOTES The colour is a mid to light straw with lime hues. The aroma is a lovely fresh blend of nectarine, honeydew melon, lime juice and hints of cucumber. The palate has an inviting roundness to it, adding depth and texture to the ripe fruit flavours. Subtle use if oak has added some fine creamy cashew notes to both the aroma and palate.

“Drink with crab and shallot pancakes, San Choy Bow, Salt and Pepper Squid and Asian deep fried fish.”

Pimpala Road Chardonnay by Geoff Merrill – Wine Companion 2019
5 RED STARs 6 straight years – Outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity.

Mount Hurtle Winery is an oasis among suburbia, nestled amid 4 acres of vineyards and landscaped gardens. With an almost Tuscan charm, the original winery and 1500m2 barrel maturation cellar (completed in 1998) is now perfectly equipped to cope with the rigors of modern winemaking. A large family of geese and ducks also inhabit the winery grounds, especially the dam near the front entrance of the estate.

Geoff Merrill Wines

In 1980, Geoff Merrill and business partner Trevor Stratton established Stratmer Vineyards, parent company of Geoff Merrill, Owens Estate and Mount Hurtle Wines. In the early years, Geoff Merrill wines were crafted at various locations across the South Australian wine regions, including Chateau Reynella and Pirramimma in McLaren Vale, and Peter Lehmann Wines in the Barossa Valley. A modern processing plant was established at McLaren Flat in 1984 in a joint venture with fellow winemaker, Goe DiFabio, which centralised the production of Geoff Merrill wines and allowed greater control over the winemaking process.
Trevor Stratton eventually sold his share of Stratmer Vineyards in 1992 to Alister Purbrick of Chateau Tahbilk, who remained a 50% partner until 2005. Geoff is now the sole owner of the company and continues to develop and produce exceptional wines.

South Australia

The McLaren Vale is predominately a red wine region, producing some of the best red wines in South Australia. Vineyards were first planted in the mid 1800s. One of the early pioneers Thomas Hardy established a business that evolved to BRL Hardy, one of the largest wine companies in the country. The region also has a healthy number of boutique wineries that consistently make fine wines and experiment with different wine styles. The climate is warm to hot with dry summers, and benefits from cooling breezes from the St Vincent Gulf. The main wine styles: Red – Shiraz (rich, ripe & generous), Cabernet Sauvignon; White – Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc.
