Masters Margaret Semillon – The Masters wines are named after a person whom, or event that, has played an intrinsic role in the Peter Lehmann story. Crafted from the classic Barossa varietals, the wines are released with 5 years of bottle age and will continue to age gracefully for many years.
Margaret Lehmann is the great woman beside the great man. Peter Lehmann winemakers rewrote the rulebooks of Barossa Semillon in the early 90s, eschewing oak and opting for an early-picked style that lent itself to ageing. The result is Margaret Semillon. Released after five years cellaring, it has youthful lemongrass aromas and citrus acidity that belie its age; and complexity you would expect from an aged white with a bountiful trophy cabinet.
A nose of lifted lemon curd, lime juice, green apple and nashi pear aromas, with a hint of lanolin and savoury biscuit in the background. The flavour is classic Margaret Semillon, pure lemon sherbet acidity and waxy blossoms accompanied by a subtle complex honeyed palate that is developing weight and a creamy texture beautifully. A length of lychee juice and floral characters round out this sophisticated wine beautifully.
Sourced from long standing Peter Lehmann growers, 50% Fiebeger Home Block (Vine Vale), planted in 1945 and 50% Scholz Willows Home Block (Light Pass), planted in 1936. The grapes are picked early and fermented cold for two weeks in stainless steel tanks to retain fruit delicacy. Following a two week fermentation period, the wine is fined, clarified and filtered and bottled prior to a five-year maturation period in their temperature controlled warehouse.
A superb accompaniment to pan-seared scallops in a garlic cream sauce, baked snapper or roast chicken or pork with mixed herb rubs.
Peter Lehmann established his namesake winery in 1979, driven in large part by a desire to support Barossa growers during a crippling grape oversupply at the time. The wine from the first vintage in 1980 was called ‘The Futures’ in a nod to the commitment Peter made to paying the growers once he had sold the wine. This arrangement was sealed with a handshake and Peter’s word was his bond. True to his promise, when the money started coming in, Peter made sure to pay his growers first.

Peter Lehmann’s personal bravery, loyalty and commitment to the Barossa forged the foundations of the winery that bears his name, built in 1979 to protect the livelihood of his mates, the independent Barossa grape growers, and their treasured vineyards. His passion for, and commitment to, the Barossa is infectious and continues with everyone today that is associated with Peter Lehmann Wines, now under the guidance of son Doug Lehmann.
The Barossa Valley is one of the major regions in Australia, where many of the major wine companies are based. It is believed the first vineyards were planted in the 1840s by Silesian migrants (who settled in Bethany). There followed a rapid expansion of plantations. The early styles of wines produced were heavy dry red wines and fortified wines that were popular both domestically and in Britain. After the Second World War the styles shifted to lighter table wines with production of Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The Barossa Valley is home to some very well known names such as Seppelt, Wolf Blass and Penfolds as well as many smaller producers. The climate is Mediterranean with hot dry summers and cool wet winters, making it ideal for viticulture. The main wine styles: White – Semillon, Riesling, Chardonnay, Semillon-Chardonnay blend; Red – Shiraz (full bodied & ripe) with Old Vine Shiraz a speciality of many vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Shiraz-Grenache-Mataro blend, Cabernet-Merlot blend.
A great varietal from Australia, certainly one to experience. The Hunter Valley is premier region for this grape, especially it’s potential to age gracefully – when young expect unique minerally, lemony, crisp style, and with age develop into nutty, honeyed wine with complexity and depth.
