Philip Shaw The Idiot Shiraz

Philip Shaw The Idiot Shiraz

Shiraz from the Orange region is reminiscent of the wine produced in Northern Rhone, France. The wine displays distinct bright spice with a fine pepper character typical of cooler regions.

The Idiot does not follow the rules of convention; a fool to some, a genius to others. We embrace the unconventional and complex character of our shiraz. Not afraid to make a statement, this wine captures the playful, eccentric and unique elements of shiraz from our cool climate

Winemaking:

• Hand sorted
• Whole berry fermentation in open vats
• Extended time of skins
• Maturation in older French oak
• Racked once during maturation
• Natural malolactic fermentation in spring

Tasting notes:

The Idiot is dark garnet with a purple hue. This cool climate Shiraz is true to its region and variety. It has a fragrant bouquet with juicy red fruits and blueberry. The palate is succulent yet elegant. It has bountiful fruit and spice finishing with fine savoury tannins.

Philip Shaw The Idiot Shiraz is a great wine at the right price

The Orange wine region is uniquely classified by both geographical and altitudinal boundaries. Located approximately 260km west of Sydney on the slopes of the Great Dividing Ranges, the Orange Geographical Indication (GI) begins at 600 meters (1,968 ft) with vineyards planted as high as 1,100 meters (3,608 ft). Due to the high elevation, the climate of the Orange wine region is one of the coolest in Australia. The rainfall is winter-spring dominant. The three driest months are the ripening period of February, March and April. Orange is also noted for intense sunlight, which, coupled with the cool growing season, result in wines of bright fruit and distinct elegance.

Philip Shaw

“The adventure began when Philip purchased the land for his Koomooloo vineyard in June 1988. In close proximity to the region’s highest peak, Mt Canobolas, Koomooloo vineyard rises to an altitude of 900M with red loam soils over limestone.
In detail the Orange region and particularly Koomooloo Vineyard is perfect for the styles of wines Philip is keen to make.
Philip Shaw Wines are made only from the grapes grown on Koomooloo, a 47ha vineyard, most of which was planted in 1988/89. “

Australia’s first vines were planted in New South Wales on the Farm Cove foreshore. The first commercial wine was made there, and the first wine exported to England – by Gregory Blaxland in 1823. Given the size and climate diversity of NSW and its large population, it is surprising that the state does not play a bigger role in Australian wine. It is a state of great contrasts, from the huge, flat expanse of irrigated vineyards in the Riverina area near Griffith to the high uplands of Mudgee in the north. The Hunter Valley is the most recognised region within NSW, famous for its long-lived Semillons and unique styled Shiraz. Riverina is the largest wine-producing region. The more recent viticultural developments are within the regions along the Great Dividing Range: Mudgee, Orange, Cowra, Hilltops etc. There is much promise and interest in the wines now being produced within these regions.
