Suckfizzle Cabernet Sauvignon

Suckfizzle Cabernet Sauvignon

Suckfizzle Cabernet Sauvignon – Suckfizzle represents the flagship wines from the Stella Bella winery in Margaret River, Western Australia.

The Suckfizzle Cabernet Sauvignon is a single vineyard wine and as such expresses the specific vineyard site in each season. Over time and vintages, the wines become an archive, or a chronology of the events of the seasons, and capture the uniqueness of the site, allowing all to witness the development of the wine’s style and personality. From Augusta in the very south of the Margaret River region, the wine is a classic, complex and unique example of Margaret River’s signature regional Cabernet Sauvignon.

Tasting Notes

The nose is strikingly perfumed with ripe mulberries, blackberries and redcurrants lifted by a hint of both star anise and sage. The background expression of mocha and vanillin from selected
Tronçais French Oak barrels integrates well with the opulent fruit flavours. Medium to full bodied in the mouth, with significant density of flavour. The tannins are fine, providing a silky, linear
transition from the front to the back of the palate. The sweetness of fruit and the suppleness of the tannins are integrated with the blackcurrant, mulberry and redcurrant fruit flavours. Finely
balanced, complete and with great charm; the wine’s retro-nasal persistence and length of flavour are stupendous.

Viticulture

This wine comes from the most southern and unique vineyard in the Margaret River Region. Situated in Augusta, surrounded by the Southern and Indian Oceans and just a stone’s throw from the Blackwood
River inlet. This extraordinary location is influenced by the prevailing Antarctic winds of the Southern Ocean and moderated by the warmth of the mighty Blackwood river. By day it is 4-5
degrees cooler than Margaret River and by night it is 2-3 degrees warmer. Thus, creating wines with distinct flavour, character and age-ability.

Winemakers notes

Individual parcels are selectively handpicked according to flavour, tannin ripeness and soil type. The fruit is kept separate, remaining in small batches, destemmed, hand sorted and gently
tipped without maceration into the fermenter, ensuring a flavour profile that delivers a plush palate which is driven by Cabernet Sauvignon skin tannin. Whole berries are pressed to selected
French oak barriques for malolactic fermentation in barrel. The wine sees minimal racking and a hands off approach ensuring it matures in peace.

Winery Information

Margaret River’s micro climate is well known to be very conducive to the production of Bordeaux style wines. This wine is a good example of a well structured Cabernet Sauvignon varietal.

This boutique winery in the heart of Margaret River creates idiosyncratic named ranges like Suckfizzle in a low interventionist and organic way keeping their approach as simple as possible to allow their cherished vineyards to show their quality.

It is not merely in the names where these wines are memorable, as once you have tasted them you will see why Luke Jolliffe, the winemaker, continues to receive recognition and awards from around the world for wines that have that wonderful Margaret River restraint and elegance, but are bound together with a fruit purity that makes them delectable.

Their philosophy regarding viticulture is simple, and that is to operate in a manner that consciously respects the vineyards that they tend as well as the local environment. Minimal chemical inputs and fertilisers are used along with minimal intervention as – aiming for vine balance. Stella Bella are acutely aware of the environmentally pristine nature of this part of the world and manage their vineyards accordingly.

Western Australia

Margaret River Wines

Regarded as one of Australia’s best wine producing regions. It is synonymous with a new era in Australian wine. Margaret River Wine really began its vineyard life as a result of two research reports from Californian viticulturalist Professor Harold Olmo and the Western Australian scientist Dr John Gladstone. In 1965 Dr Gladstone’s report indicated that the region had all the attributes to produce world quality wines. This advise was acted on by Dr Tom Cullity who set up his Vasse Felix vineyard near Willyabrup, followed by Dr Kevin Cullen and his wife Di who set up Cullen Wines. The climate is regarded as ‘cool’ because of its long slow ripening season. This region is regarded along with Coonawarra and the Yarra Valley as one of the premium Cabernet Sauvignon areas in Australia. The main wine styles: Red – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet-Merlot, Shiraz; White – Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho.

Margaret River Wines – a plethora of incredible wines from Western Australia

Cabernet Sauvignon

Probably the world’s most famous red grape variety. Originated from Bordeaux and has been present in Australia since 1832.

Wherever it has been planted the resulting wine has developed its own identity yet it is always recognisable. Although it will vary in intensity the aroma will always be dominated by berry characteristics in the classic wines and the tannins will be firm or textured and soften with age. Cabernet Sauvignon is high in acid and tannin and remains fresh for many years. It can be earthy and display strong blackcurrant flavours. The naturally high tannin and inherent complexity mean all Cabernet Sauvignons will improve with age.

Coonawarra, with its prized ‘terra rossa’ soils, Margaret River, Mount Barker (Great Southern) and Yarra Valley regions are considered the premium Cabernet Sauvignon areas in Australia.
