Tahbilk Marsanne

Tahbilk Marsanne

Tahbilk Marsanne – tastes of grapefruit zest and citrus floral aromas are carried through to a decidedly lively, mineral palate complemented by pear, Granny Smith apple and citrus fruits

Tahbilk is undoubtedly the home of Marsanne, with the largest plantings in the world producing a wine that is second to none. The region is everything. The 2023 Marsanne offers a natural acidity line that we only see in excellent years. The low yields meant exceptional fruit, resulting in a lovely style of wine. This is a lovely spring wine, perfect in its youth but will reward to those who can offer it some time. Pairs well with seafood, a spring salad or a spicy Thai curry.

Winemakers Notes

The wine was made reductively, without contact with oxygen to preserve the fresh, fruity character. After destemming the grapes were lightly crushed and cooled through a heat
exchanger, then pressed. The pressings were vinified separately; each was clarified and fermented with neutral yeasts at 10 to 12°C. The wine did not undergo malolactic
conversion in order to preserve its crisp character. It was then stabilised, medium filtered and blended prior to bottling.

Information about the Producer

Established in 1860, Tahbilk is an historic family-owned winery, renowned for their rare aged Marsanne. The estate has the world’s largest single holding of the varietal and produces
Marsanne from vines established in 1927, which are among the oldest in the world. Tahbilk is known as ‘tabilk tabilk’ in the language of the Daungwurrung clans, which translates as
the ‘place of many waterholes’. It perfectly describes this premium viticultural landscape, which is located in the Nagambie Lakes region of Central Victoria. The estate comprises
1,214 hectares, including a seven mile frontage to the Goulburn River. Environmental sustainability is paramount at Tahbilk and in 2013 they became carbon neutral..

Tahbilk Winery

Tahbilk is the oldest family owned winery and vineyard in Victoria. Purchased by the Purbrick family is 1925, it is now home to five generations.
The original 1860 winery and cellar door is like stepping into a hidden oasis, where the natural landscape blends to complement a rich winemaking heritage.
Tahbilk has a rich source of old vineyards and iconic single vineyard wines, including Victoria’s oldest Shiraz planted in 1860 and Australian’s oldest Marsanne planted in 1927.

Marsanne

“Although much-admired in the Rhône wines of southern France, Marsanne is a variety that only really received its fully due praise in Australia.
It is particularly good in the Goulburn and Yarra Valleys (Victoria). Basically, it’s like Chardonnay and Semillon but more so. More honeyed, more peachy, more spicy and there’s just a little more lemony acidity, too, which saves this grape from luscious overkill. As with its cousins from the Rhone, you won’t see too many of these wines around but if you spot a bottle, grab it, it’ll be worth trying.”
