Willunga 100 Shiraz Viognier

Willunga 100 McLaren Vale Shiraz Viognier – Deep purple red in colour, the wine is a heady mix of dark berry fruit, with earthy nuances and lifted florals from the addition of Viognier. Excellent structure, it has great depth and richness of plums and blackberries with supportive, balanced oak, bold tannins and a lingering finish.

The colour is bright Purple intensity, solid to the core. The nose is offering a tremendous lift of spice from the Viognier, dark black berries supported in the background by the careful use of oak. The palate is rich and luscious with the fruits dominating harnessed by flowing tannins that are long and lasting.

The soils in McLaren Vale are among the oldest in the world, estimated at over 500 million years. The resulting low vigour and old vines combine to produce low yields in the vineyard and stunning, concentrated fruit.
The name is taken from the historic ‘Hundred’ (administrative area of 100 square miles) of Willunga that was established in 1839 – only three years after the settlement of South Australia – and today marks the land from which much of our fruit is sourced. The tree featured on our bottle label is an old River Red Gum, which stands tall over the vineyards and was already over one hundred years of age when the first vines were planted in McLaren Vale in the 1840s.
Before the first vintage in 2005, the team explored the McLaren Vale vineyards and came across plots of 50-year-old Grenache vines. At this time, most of the wine produced from this fruit was destined for blending as there was little demand for top quality Grenache. We decided this had to change, so they made these vines their focus and gave them the attention they deserved. They haven’t looked back since.

Willunga 100 Shiraz Viognier – a great Aussie red blend.

Willunga 100

Willunga 100 aims to produce unique and distinctive wines which capture the essence of the region. The grapes come from a range of selected vineyards in McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills (for the whites), including some over 50 years old. After only its first vintage in 2005, wine journalist and judge James Halliday gave the winery a Five Star rating in the 2008 Guide, and named it as one of his ‘Top Ten newcomers’. This vindicated the original aim of Willunga 100, which was to inject some quality and excitement back into Australian wine at this price. New vintages will be made by winemaker Tim James (ex Hardy’s and Wirra Wirra and a regular on the wine judging circuit) and continue to build on the quality of the range.

South Australia

The McLaren Vale is predominately a red wine region, producing some of the best red wines in South Australia. Vineyards were first planted in the mid 1800s. One of the early pioneers Thomas Hardy established a business that evolved to BRL Hardy, one of the largest wine companies in the country. The region also has a healthy number of boutique wineries that consistently make fine wines and experiment with different wine styles. The climate is warm to hot with dry summers, and benefits from cooling breezes from the St Vincent Gulf. The main wine styles: Red – Shiraz (rich, ripe & generous), Cabernet Sauvignon; White – Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc.
