Yalumba FDR1A – In 1974 Yalumba created an outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon & Shiraz blend known simply as Fine Dry Red 1A or Yalumba FDR1A. The wine became a legend in winemaking circles, appreciated for its fruit expression and restrained power. Sourced from exceptional sites within the cool rugged slopes of Eden Valley, FDR1A is a testament to winemaking and viticultural craftsmanship
The grapes for FDR1A are sourced entirely from vineyards within Eden Valley. The four Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards and two Shiraz vineyards have been selected to showcase the elegance and purity of fruit that the region is so well known for.
Deep crimson red in colour. Cedar fragrances and blue fruits are joined by complex earthy tones, lots of blackberry, blackcurrant and chocolate. An elegant and generously flavoured wine that
is succulent with a rich core of dark berries and smooth chocolate coated tannins.
Enjoy Yalumba FDR1A with Beef fillet with beetroot and horseradish or spaghetti alla puttanesca.
Yalumba Distinguished Sites is a family of exceptional wines; each carefully sourced and masterfully crafted to capture the true essence of specific, special sites from which it is grown. This Fine Dry Red is an example of Yalumbas commitment to, and mastery of, the quintessential Australian Cabernet Shiraz. Fruit to craft this wine is picked from vineyards in Eden Valleys beautiful high country. It has a complex array of fine, powdery sandalwood and cedar notes with traces of mint. Laden with fresh, aromatic red fruits, the wine is youthful and elegant in the mouth with vitality, a firm structure and soft tannins.
In 1847 a 37-year-old brewer called Samuel Smith left his home in Wareham, Dorset with his wife Mary and their four children. Boarding a simple three-masted barque they left Plymouth and began the long and arduous journey to Australia, arriving in Port Adelaide. From there they trecked north to Angaston where Samuel took a job as a gardener. It was arguably this brave decision to start a new life in a remote and distant land, together with the hardship that they endured, that formed the strong sense of family unity that has been the bedrock of the family business ever since. In 1849 he started the wine farm that would grow over the next 5 generations to become one of Australia’s leading wineries, with a winemaking culture that is internationally recognised and respected. To embrace the native culture, Samuel decided to adopt a local name for his farm, calling it “Yalumba” meaning “all the country around’’ in the indigenous Peramangk language.
Yalumba is part of Australian wine alliance Australia’s First Families of Wine, a multimillion-dollar venture to help resurrect the fortunes of the $6 billion industry while highlighting the quality and diversity of Australian wine.

Yalumba has been developing its own sustainable viticulture program since the mid 1990s. This starts in the vineyard and extends to every aspect of winemaking, production, packaging and distribution. Many awards and milestones have resulted due to sustainability now being at our core. All Yalumba wines were announced vegetarian and vegan friendly as of 2011. Yalumba is the first wine company in the world to receive the Climate Protection Award from the US Environmental Protection Agency, 2007. These benefits are most obvious in your wine glass.
“Apart from economic viability and social equity, for us, sustainability is about biodiversity in our vineyards,” says Winemaker Louisa Rose. “To encourage it, we’ve done a number of things: we’ve reduced the amount of chemicals we use, incorporated an integrated pest management system, and encouraged biodiversity of vegetation in our vineyards”. All in the name of better winemaking
