Lionheart of the Barossa Shiraz

LIONHEART OF THE BAROSSA SHIRAZ

Lionheart of the Barossa Shiraz – Deep purple in colour, this wine opens with intense notes of rosemary, dark chocolate, plums and white pepper all intertwined with well-integrated oak undertones. The palate shows great depth, underpinned by wonderful acidity and fine tannins.

VINEYARDS

This wine comes from ancient, gnarled vines, some approaching and many over a hundred years of age. These vines not only survive, but thrive, on their own roots in some of the oldest soils on the planet. The vines are planted at an elevation of 221 metres.

VINTAGE

The 2023 vintage in the Barossa Valley was later than recent years, with ripening slowed by a cool, wet spring and a mild summer free of major heatwaves. Veraison was delayed and harvest began in mid-late March, allowing for extended hang time and the preservation of natural acidity. Rain during harvest required careful vineyard management, but fruit remained in good health.

In the fourth week of March, whole bunches of Shiraz were hand-harvested, gently crushed, and naturally fermented in open fermenters over eight days. The cap was managed with twice-daily hand plunging before the wine was carefully basket-pressed into a selection of predominantly older, with some new, French oak barriques to complete fermentation. Following 18 months of maturation and a racking in the same oak, the wine was bottled without fining or filtration to preserve the pure expression of the vineyard.

Deep purple in colour, this wine opens with intense notes of rosemary, dark chocolate, plums and white pepper all intertwined with well-integrated oak undertones. The palate shows great depth, underpinned by wonderful acidity and fine tannins.

Dandelion Vineyards is a unique fusion of vineyards and vignerons. Their wines represent decades of experience, blending the fruit of their old vine gardens with the finest traditions of artisan winemaking.
Dandelion Vineyards are proven plantings that have stood the test of time. Their wish is to nurture the unique character of these vineyards and express their terroir in the wines. Capturing variety, vintage and vineyard requires
an enlightened approach and although vignerons see the Devil in every weed, they encourage the humble Dandelion amongst the vines as they suppress winter weeds, provide mulch in summer, and proffer their Wishing Clocks in spring to blow off and make our wish come true.
Nick Stock, one of Australia’s leading journalists, wrote about Dandelion Vineyards saying, “The approach is remarkably simple and sees Elena making wine from a suite of beautiful old vineyards across that blessed curve that runs from the Barossa, up through the Eden Valley and Adelaide Hills and down into McLaren Vale.”

Five Red Star Winery: James Halliday Australian Wine Companion
“This is a highly impressive partnership… It brings together vineyards spread across the Adelaide Hills, Eden Valley, Langhorne Creek, McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Fleurieu Peninsula. Elena is not only the beautiful wife of industry dilettante Zar Brooks, but also an exceptionally gifted winemaker

Barossa Valley

The Barossa Valley is one of the major regions in Australia, where many of the major wine companies are based. It is believed the first vineyards were planted in the 1840s by Silesian migrants (who settled in Bethany). There followed a rapid expansion of plantations. The early styles of wines produced were heavy dry red wines and fortified wines that were popular both domestically and in Britain. After the Second World War the styles shifted to lighter table wines with production of Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The Barossa Valley is home to some very well known names such as Seppelt, Wolf Blass and Penfolds as well as many smaller producers. The climate is Mediterranean with hot dry summers and cool wet winters, making it ideal for viticulture. The main wine styles: White – Semillon, Riesling, Chardonnay, Semillon-Chardonnay blend; Red – Shiraz (full bodied & ripe) with Old Vine Shiraz a speciality of many vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Shiraz-Grenache-Mataro blend, Cabernet-Merlot blend.

Shiraz

flourish in a range of climates. In the warm to hot climates you can expect extremely intense aromatic, rich, full bodied wines, with hugh fruit (almost sweet) and chocolately tasting. In the more moderate/cooler climates you’re more likely to find structured Shiraz wines with black cherry, pepper and spice characters rather than the chocolate and fruit styles found in warmer climates.
