Yalumba Samuels Collection Chardonnay

Yalumba Samuels Collection Chardonnay

Yalumba Samuels Collection Chardonnay – This fresh, zesty and textural style of Chardonnay is sourced from a family estate vineyard high in the Eden Valley, located 545 metres above sea level.

With 170 years of unbroken independence, Yalumba continues to make wine at its founder’s home estate under direction of the same family today. Samuel’s Collection honours Yalumba’s founder Samuel Smith, his spirit of independence and conviction to invest in the land and make great wine.

Vintage Conditions

A wet winter in Eden Valley set the vines up for a healthy start to the growing season. Spring was drier than average so canopy growth began rapidly. Summer was warm and dry but sugar accumulation was much slower than usual which resulted in wines with excellent fruit flavours. Nights in the Eden Valley remained cool throughout the harvest period, which helped to retain fresh fruit flavours and good levels of natural acidity.

Winemaker’s Notes

Vineyard parcels were selected and batched together for harvest and fermentation according to flavour profile and ripeness. 52% of the blend was fermented in French oak barriques coopered in-house at Yalumba. The remainder of the blend was fermented in stainless steel.
All of the fermentation was conducted by natural wild yeast adding an extra layer of complexity and texture to the wine and complementing its zesty citrus flavours. After the completion of fermentation, extended lees contact and regular bâtonnage was continued for 7 months before selection of the final blend.

Tasting Notes

Very pale green gold in colour. Fresh aromas of grapefruit zest and lemon curd with underlying notes of citrus blossom and hints of stone fruit. The palate is zesty and textural with a refreshing citrus and grapefruit acid drive.
Enjoy with chicken and leek risotto or a vegan leek and mushroom pie, on a bed of mash and steamed greens.

Producer Profile

In 1847 a 37-year-old brewer called Samuel Smith left his home in Wareham, Dorset with his wife Mary and their four children. Boarding a simple three-masted barque they left Plymouth and began the long and arduous journey to Australia, arriving in Port Adelaide. From there they trecked north to Angaston where Samuel took a job as a gardener. It was arguably this brave decision to start a new life in a remote and distant land, together with the hardship that they endured, that formed the strong sense of family unity that has been the bedrock of the family business ever since. In 1849 he started the wine farm that would grow over the next 5 generations to become one of Australia’s leading wineries, with a winemaking culture that is internationally recognised and respected. To embrace the native culture, Samuel decided to adopt a local name for his farm, calling it “Yalumba” meaning “all the country around’’ in the indigenous Peramangk language.

Yalumba is part of Australian wine alliance Australia’s First Families of Wine, a multimillion-dollar venture to help resurrect the fortunes of the $6 billion industry while highlighting the quality and diversity of Australian wine.

Yalumba

Yalumba, founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, is Australia’s oldest family owned winery. Today, the winery is owned by fifth generation descendants, Robert & Sam Hill Smith and their families.
Yalumba is determined to create wines with genuine regional character, varietal flavour and individual personality; wines that say remarkable things about some of the world’s most remarkable wine regions.

Eden Valley

The Eden Valley is between 400 and 600 metres in the Barossa Range, part of the Mount Lofty Range. It shares it historical roots with the Barossa Valley. Yalumba has substantial vineyard holdings, and a winery at Angaston, the site of the first vines planted by founder Samuel Smith in 1849. The cool climate provides ideal conditions for the production of high quality Riesling, Chardonnay and Shiraz wine.

Chardonnay

Australia’s most widely planted white grape variety. The heavily oaked styles of the earlier nineties are now being replaced with styles emphasising the regional fruit and greater complexity. The cooler climate regions producing styles of great elegance and finesse.
