Australian Shiraz Special

Australian Shiraz Special – Six bottles of Shiraz from around the regions.

Australian Shiraz Special – It’s difficult to overstate the importance of Shiraz to Australian wine. Shiraz is Australia’s most planted wine grape variety and is grown in most Australian wine regions. When the last national planting statistics were collected in 2015, there were around 40,000 hectares (ha) of Shiraz, ranking Australia second behind France (60,000 ha) and well ahead of third-placed Spain (20,000 ha).

Shiraz has been in Australia longer than many other varieties and today it’s made in almost every wine region and loved around the world. Shiraz wines are known for their bold flavours and diversity of styles.

Australia is home to the world’s oldest continuously productive Shiraz vines, with some of the oldest plantings believed to date back to 1843 (Langmeil, Barossa, South Australia), 1847 (Turkey Flat, Barossa) and 1860 (Tahbilk, Nagambie Lakes, Victoria). These ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines produce small crops of grapes with intensely concentrated flavours.

Shiraz creates wines with medium to full-bodied character and varying flavour profiles and structure depending on region, climate and techniques. It comes in many styles – from delicious, everyday drinking to collectible fine wines. Warm climates usually produce powerful and rich styles, while cooler climates make lighter wines.

Many Shiraz wines can be kept for five years or more, with the best Australian wines ageing for 20 years and beyond. As it ages it gets lighter in colour with softer and more savoury flavours. Store it in a cool, dark and dry place where the temperature doesn’t fluctuate. Wines sealed under cork should be stored lying down.

Soldiers Block Shiraz

Soldiers Block Shiraz

Soldiers Block Shiraz

Soldiers Block Shiraz – Soft supple Victorian Shiraz, dangerously moreish by the glass..

Winemakers Notes

This Shiraz is sourced from ancient Victorian soils in order to achieve a wine with greater finesse, purity and structure as well as typical eucalypt flavours and saline finish associated with the area.
Picked at night and crushed within an hour of picking before being sent to the fermentation tanks. The Shiraz grapes were fermented in temperature-controlled tanks maintained at 22 – 25ºC to avoid
extracting any harsh tannins, with the fermentations pumped over to extract good colour. 20% of the final blend is barrel aged. The winemaker also added 5% Malbec at the end of the whole process – a
sneaky technique that gives a mulberry fruit twist on the finish.

Tasting Notes

Bright, aromatic and juicy on the nose with just a touch of naughty bacon fat. True to the varietal, the tiny proportion of Malbec in this blend gives a flowery perfume. This vintage is our brightest, most dangerously drinkable Shiraz to date due to its fine, bright fruit and soft silky elegance.

Juicy and dangerously drinkable, with vibrant red currant, mulberry, and a soft, silky texture. The wine’s balanced acidity and fine tannins lead to a refreshing, clean finish.

Food Pairing

Drink with Moroccan lamb tagine, roast vegetables and hard cheeses.

Vineyards

This Shiraz is crafted from grapes sourced from Victoria, Australia, where ancient soils bring finesse, structure, and depth. The vineyard sites, managed with sustainability in mind, yield a Shiraz with the typical eucalypt notes and a distinctive saline finish associated with the region’s terroir.

In celebration of the ‘Returned Soldiers Settlement Act’ of 1915, when returning Australian soldiers were rewarded with ‘blocks’ of land, which led to the planting of vineyards, still used today.

Established by Bob & Cherie Berton in May 1996 with 75 acres of land at 450m above sea level on gently rolling hills in a sub-region of Eden Valley in South Australia. The Reserve Shiraz and Reserve Chardonnay wines are still sourced from this plot. In 2007 Bob purchased the Yenda winery in the heart of the Riverina. This state of the art facility allows Berton Vineyards to produce value for money wines which sit alongside his premium single vineyard offerings. From humble beginnings, Berton Vineyards has grown into one of the 20 largest wineries in Australia, whose winery and wines have received strong reviews and accolades internationally. In 2014, they were rated one of the top-20 producers in terms of quality in Australia. They put their success down to maintaining personal relationships with their customers.

Berton Vineyards all started at our Eden Valley Vineyard, in High Eden, South Australia. High Eden is a subregion of Eden Valley, situated in the Barossa Valley. It is the highest part of the Barossa, about 500 meters above sea level. In this beautiful part of the world we have planted Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The best parcels of fruit from our Shiraz vineyards go into our Berton Vineyards Bonsai Shiraz, our flagship wine. Fruit from the Shiraz vineyard also forms the backbone for our Reserve Shiraz, which won the Decanter Platinum Best Value Rhone varietal in 2017. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc make our High Eden Range, and the Chardonnay goes into the White Rock Chardonnay and our Reserve Eden Valley Chardonnay.

Bremerton NAP Shiraz

Bremerton NAP Shiraz – Rich and ripe with a concentrated plum fruit core and a silky texture. NAP = No Added Preservatives

VEGAN FRIENDLY

BREMERTON NAP SHIRAZ – selection process – Rebecca Wilson, winemaker. –

So far the parcels that have allowed a NAP shiraz to be made have been very concentrated in colour (anthocyanins) a natural preservative. Also very microbially sound so able to sit with no SO2. Great fruit expression and natural balance. We monitor parcels post MLF and pick the ones to be topped and no so2 added then monitor their development for 4-5 month to allow for some natural stability before committing them to the final selection.

Vinification details

Fruit was picked from Bremerton’s Langhorne Creek vineyard. After fermenting in open top fermenters, the wine was pressed to oak and aged on lees for four months.
The natural concentration of anthocyanin (colour) helps preserve this fresh and vibrant wine. Selected barrels were carefully gravity-racked to blend then sent to bottle young to capture the vibrancy.

Bremerton is a Member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia. Bremerton aims to be at the forefront of dealing with environmental issues within the wine industry and implements best practice principles on a wide range of environmental concerns including: caring for native wildlife, recycling winery waste products, water conservation policies, minimising pesticides and the use of sulphur, and working towards neutralisation of their carbon footprint.

Murphy Vineyard Shiraz

Murphy Vineyard Shiraz

Murphy Vineyard Shiraz

Murphy Vineyard Shiraz is an attractive, fruit-driven Shiraz which comes from the Murphy family’s vineyards in Australia’s Murray Darling region where they have grown grapes since 1909.
Cherry red with hints of dark plum and chocolate on the nose. The wine is seamlessly balanced with sweet lifted fruit, subtle oak and soft tannins, a delicious wine made to enjoy now.

Harvested at full ripeness, the grapes were crushed and fermented on skins for seven days with regular pumpovers to extract colour and flavour. After pressing, the wine was aged with select French and American oak before blending and bottling.

The Murphy family have grown grapes in the Murray Darling region of Australia, part of the Big Rivers, since 1909. They build on this experience to create their fruit-driven wines.
The grape selection and winemaking practices at Murphy Vineyards aim to highlight the fruit flavours with these appealing wines that show ripe fruit aromas and soft, rich palates. Murphy Vineyards have selected, from their own plantings, Chardonnay and Shiraz grapes of good sound quality which have displayed true varietal expression in the final wine.

Murphy Vineyard is part of the Trentham Estate group. For over 20 years, the Murray Darling Wetlands Working Group Ltd has worked on wetlands throughout the Murray-Darling Basin, restoring and improving the management of wetlands throughout the catchment, of the Murray-Darling Basin.

Shiraz

flourish in a range of climates. In the warm to hot climates you can expect extremely intense aromatic, rich, full bodied wines, with hugh fruit (almost sweet) and chocolately tasting. In the more moderate/cooler climates you’re more likely to find structured Shiraz wines with black cherry, pepper and spice characters rather than the chocolate and fruit styles found in warmer climates.
