YARRA VALLEY

Less than an hour’s drive from Melbourne, the historic Yarra Valley is one of Australia’s top cool-climate wine regions. A mix of traditional and contemporary wineries produce world-class Pinot NoirChardonnayCabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, plus alternative varieties like Nebbiolo. This expansive region is a popular tourist spot – it’s packed with award-winning restaurants and cellar doors, and its green hills and misty valleys make it a beautiful place to explore.

MORNINGTON PENINSULA

It’s easy to see why the Mornington Peninsula wine region is such a popular destination for day trips and weekend getaways. Just over an hour south of Melbourne, it’s a scenic region of sandy beaches, green pastures, and acclaimed cellar doors and restaurants dotted among villages. The peninsula is surrounded by three bodies of water, which deliver cool breezes that help produce top-quality wines, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio/Gris

RUTHERGLEN

Rutherglen is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and most famous for its world-class fortified wines, including opulent Muscat and Topaque. This warm and sunny region, located a few hours from Melbourne in north-eastern Victoria, is also renowned for its bold reds, including Durif and Shiraz. Drive or cycle your way through the gum tree–studded landscape, stopping to visit family-run wineries, taste local produce and swim in the Murray River.

Soldiers Block Malbec

Soldiers Block Malbec

Soldiers Block Malbec

Soldiers Block Malbec – Warm, soft and lusciously lush this is juicy, crunchy and bright. A rich and chocolate-y Malbec with an abundance of ripe plum, cassis and Morello cherry flavours.

Winemakers Notes

All the Malbec fruit comes from an estate in the Swan Hill region where there are 5 hectares of Malbec (approximately 12.5 acres which produces 90 tonnes of fruit per vintage). The Malbec are on
their own roots and were planted in 2000. With the age of the vines and the harsh growing conditions, the Malbec vines are less vigorous which leads to a more intense colour and flavour. The vines are
trained on a two wire vertical trellis, drip irrigation and minimum fertilisation. All the vines are machine harvested at night between mid to late March and grown on red sandy loam soil with
limestone clay base. Climate is Mediterranean with summer temperatures between 30 and 40°C. Total vineyard area is 1250 acres. Once the grapes have been crushed pressed and sent to the fermenter, the
winery then pumps over 4 times a day. Vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks at 25°C for three weeks. Malolactic fermentation takes place over 4 weeks. 50% of the blend is aged in French and
American oak barriques for 3 months.

Tasting Note

Black aromatic Malbec, with notes of black cherry fruit and flavours of summer pudding. Charming, soft, sumptuous but with a core grip and power that gives it length and the muscles for food.

Food Pairing

Great with rich and hearty food. Try me with a rich casserole or roasted Mediterranean vegetables

In celebration of the ‘Returned Soldiers Settlement Act’ of 1915, when returning Australian soldiers were rewarded with ‘blocks’ of land, which led to the planting of vineyards, still used today.

Soldiers Block Chardonnay

Soldiers Block Chardonnay

Soldiers Block Chardonnay

Soldiers Block Chardonnay is an elegant and easy drinking wine. This vibrant Chardonnay exhibits lifted fruit character, bright tangerine fleshiness, textural mouth-feel, a bright palate and a long and foodie finish.. The judicious addition of Langhorne Creek Chardonnay adds palate weight and texture.

Winemakers Notes

Long standing working relationships with some key growers enable the winery to source premium fruit, with the ultimate aim of making excellent quality Australian house wines with true style and character. Grapes were picked earlier than usual to ensure balance and freshness in the final wine. Harvesting took place in the early dawn hours when it’s still cool and calm which helps retain the rich characters within these grapes. Once in the cellar, they are gently crushed to maintain the bright, fresh flavours crucial to the clonal tang. Around 15% of the grapes are sourced from the cooler, sea breeze influenced Langhorne Creek area. This portion is barrel aged in French medium toast casks to obtain a more complex, textural and weighty style of wine. It is then added to the greater part of the blend which is fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel to retain the fresh fruit characters.

Tasting Notes

This vibrant Chardonnay exhibits lifted fruit character, bright tangerine fleshiness, textural mouth- feel, a bright palate and a long and foodie finish. The judicious addition of blob of oaked Chardonnay adds palate weight and texture.

Food Pairing

Eat with Full-flavoured fish such as trout or halibut or chicken in a light creamy sauce.

Little Yering Pinot Noir

Little Yering Pinot Noir

Little Yering Pinot Noir

Little Yering Pinot Noir is rich and soft with vibrant, plush flavours of juicy cherries and pomegranate, along with a savoury and spicy lift. Cool-climate Pinot in a silky, approachable style.

Vineyard
Situated just 45 kilometres east of Melbourne, the Yarra Valley is a large and diverse cool-climate wine region. Its elevation spectacularly ranges from lows of 50m to heights of 1,250m, due to the influence of the Great Dividing Range. The region is characterised by significant rainfall during winter and spring, which helps to nourish the vines throughout the dry, but cool summers. The estate-grown Pinot Noir vines are between 15 to 25 years old and are planted in vineyards in Yarra Glen, Yering and Coldstream. Additional grower fruit comes from a very cold site in Mount Alexander. The vines are clones D-Clone and MV6, and are cane pruned and VSP trained, which suits the terroir made up of Duplex grey loam over yellow clay. The cooler site allows for excellent diurnal temperature shifts, which imbues the fruit with intense aromatics and natural, refreshing acidity.

Winemaking
This wine was made in a soft and approachable style. The grapes were fermented in a combination of Potter, Roto and open fermenters at controlled temperatures using selected yeasts to retain the purity and freshness of the cool-climate fruit. Following fermentation, the wine was matured in stainless steel tanks to retain the pure Pinot Noir characters.

Yering Station has a rich history which began in 1838 when the Scottish Ryrie brothers established a property in the heart of the Yarra Valley naming it Yering, an Aboriginal name, and planted Victoria’s first vineyard. In the 1850’s Yering Station was acquired by Swiss-French migrant Paul de Castella. He greatly extended the vineyards, planting with cuttings imported from France, including some from Château Lafite. He is widely regarded as the father of the wine industry in the Yarra Valley. He built a house and a garden, planting 330 elm trees along the driveway, which still stand today and also built the winery, which is now the cellar door. Paul’s winemaking achievements were recognised in 1861, when Yering wines won the prized Argus Gold Cup and in 1889 when they won a Grand Prix at the Universal Exhibition in Paris – the sole award for a wine made in the southern hemisphere. This marked the beginning of global acclaim. Yering passed through other hands throughout the early 1900’s until it was purchased by the current owners: the Rathbone Family in 1996 (they also own Xanadu in Margaret River and Mount Langi Ghiran in the Grampians). Chardonnay, Viognier, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvedre and Cabernet Sauvignon are cultivated on 112 hectares in five sites across the Yarra Glen and Coldstream subregions of the cool climate Yarra Valley, each with its own subtle changes in soil, aspect and elevation. Yering have an intimate understanding of their vineyards. They have invested in precision viticulture technology, which allows them to map the finest parcels from their best blocks – and even their best rows. In this way they are able to discover micro-variations that reveal immaculate parcels of wine – which is what happened with their sensational flagship wine Scarlett, a seductive and complex Pinot Noir pioneered by the late viticulturist Nathan Scarlett. This wine has been awarded a 99-point score by James Halliday. In the cellar tradition and innovation are seamlessly blended to highlight the distinctive hallmarks of their cool climate fruit. Native yeasts are utilised for fermentation; they employ hand-plunging and the wines are matured in French oak. The wines are meticulously crafted. They vinify each parcel of vines separately, and evaluate them in an annual allocation tasting, where each parcel is randomised and served blind to determine their final home. This 5-Star rated winery is a benchmark for cool climate wines across Australia. They bring the vineyard to the bottle in beautifully poised and elegant wines, which fully express the characteristics of this historic region.

Vineyard
This wine is made from Muscat of Alexandria grapes grown in vineyards in Victoria. The Muscat of Alexandria variety is believed to have originated in North Africa and spread
around the Mediterranean from the port of Alexandria, Egypt, possibly during the Roman Empire. The variety has found a natural home in the vineyards of Victoria, where
the grapes are grown sustainably in vineyards that are certified by Sustainable Wines of Australia.
Winemaking
This wine is made from Muscat of Alexandria grapes. The grapes were harvested from early February to late March 2024 at baumés ranging from 11.6 to 14.4. Fruit was
crushed to drainers, pressed, fermented in stainless steel tanks using Chardonnay yeast and stored at 0° before being bottled. The wine was bottled soon after fermentation

Producer Note
Brown Brothers is one of Australia’s leading family-owned wine companies. Based in Milawa, Victoria for over 130 years, it is the Brown family’s sense of adventure and
innovation has led them to where they are now: creating exciting new wines, pushing boundaries, and developing vineyards in some of the best regions in Australia. In 1989,
Brown Brothers celebrated 100 years of winemaking and established the ‘Kindergarten Winery’ a mini-sized winery where experimental and innovative wines can be made on
a smaller scale. In 2015, fourth generation Katherine Brown joined the winemaking team and became the first female winemaker in the family, working alongside award winning winemaker Cate Looney. For a company named Brown Brothers, today they are led by a team of eight women and two men. Their pioneering range of wines includes less known varieties such as Cienna and Tarrango and an alcohol-free duo
named ‘Zero’. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, and all their wines are precisely crafted, with care, attention and consistency.

Tahbilk Viognier

Tahbilk Viognier

Tahbilk Viognier

Tahbilk Viognier – Intense and fragrant rose petal and ginger spice lead a softly textured palate of apricot, peach and honeydew melon characters, lifted by a deliciously zesty acidity

Winemakers Notes

Vinified in a reductive style; without oxygen contact to retain the vibrant, fruity character. The grapes were destemmed, lightly crushed and cooled through a heat exchanger and
pressed. The pressings were vinified separately; clarified and fermented with neutral yeasts at low temperatures of 10 to 12°C, fermenting at 0.5 to 1°Baume per day. The wine was
made in an unoaked style without malolactic conversion to preserve its crisp character. It was then protein and cold stabilised, filtered, blended and bottled.

Vineyard Details

Tahbilk’s vineyards are grouped along the banks of the Goulburn River and an anabranch of it which flows through the estate. The water has a tempering influence on the climate.
The vines are grown at approximately 134 metres elevation of gently undulating and flat terrain. The soils are sandy loam with ferric oxide content, which vary from very fine sand
near the anabranch to denser loams on the plains. The Viognier vines are clone HTK and are grafted to Schwarzman rootstocks. They are trained on a single wire trellis with a
mixture of head and cordon training and are spur pruned. Tahbilk’s vines are sustainably cultivated; composting and mulching takes place which improves soil health by
promoting earthworm activity. Mulching helps to control weeds and conserves water, reducing vine stress.

Information about the Producer

Established in 1860, Tahbilk is an historic family-owned winery, renowned for their rare aged Marsanne. The estate has the world’s largest single holding of the varietal and produces
Marsanne from vines established in 1927, which are among the oldest in the world. Tahbilk is known as ‘tabilk tabilk’ in the language of the Daungwurrung clans, which translates as
the ‘place of many waterholes’. It perfectly describes this premium viticultural landscape, which is located in the Nagambie Lakes region of Central Victoria. The estate comprises
1,214 hectares, including a seven mile frontage to the Goulburn River. Environmental sustainability is paramount at Tahbilk and in 2013 they became carbon neutral..

Victoria

Victoria Wines

Victoria is a small state in area, but home to possibly the largest number of wineries in Australia, most of them which are small family-run operations. Victoria’s diverse topography, combining numerous mountain ranges, like the Grampians and the Victorian Pyrenees throughout the centre; flat plains in the northeast; and hilly, ocean-cooled reaches in the Melbourne area, make its vineyards amongst the most scenic in Australia. An enormous range of wine styles are available, and virtually every varietal flourishes in some part of the state.
