Masters Wigan Riesling

Masters Wigan Riesling by Peter Lehmann

Masters Wigan Riesling by Peter Lehmann

Masters Wigan Riesling – The Masters wines are named after a person whom, or event that, has played an intrinsic role in the Peter Lehmann story. Crafted from the classic Barossa varietals, the wines are released with 5 years of bottle age and will continue to age gracefully for many years.

An exemplar of the variety always released with bottle age to sing its best song. The most awarded Riesling in Australia’s history! A classic with a deserved reputation.

Tasting Note

Early picking has produced a fresh, lively Riesling with a delicate green tinge and hints of freshly picked limes, preserved lemons with just a touch of toast in the background. Fine, linear, alive on the
palate with breadth of citrus oil, tang and quickening acidity, minerals and poise. This legendary wine will cellar for many years to come.

Wine Makers Notes

Sourced solely from Ben Zander’s “Wroxton” Vineyard, situated at 500m asl from 20-30 year old vines. This vineyard has all the hallmarks of a classic Eden Valley Riesling site – high altitude, shaly,
schisty soil and adequate canopy ensuring the fruit remains in optimum condition throughout ripening. The grapes were picked early and cold fermented in stainless steel tanks. Following a two week
fermentation period, the wine was clarified and bottled immediately before being cellared at the winery for five years prior to release. Drink now or cellar until 2038.

Food Match

Enjoy with Andrew Wigan’s all time favourite – pan fried, freshly caught King George Whiting matched with crunchy home-cut potato chips, a match made in heaven! Don’t forget the lemon!

Peter Lehmann established his namesake winery in 1979, driven in large part by a desire to support Barossa growers during a crippling grape oversupply at the time. The wine from the first vintage in 1980 was called ‘The Futures’ in a nod to the commitment Peter made to paying the growers once he had sold the wine. This arrangement was sealed with a handshake and Peter’s word was his bond. True to his promise, when the money started coming in, Peter made sure to pay his growers first.

Peter Lehmann Wines

Peter Lehmann’s personal bravery, loyalty and commitment to the Barossa forged the foundations of the winery that bears his name, built in 1979 to protect the livelihood of his mates, the independent Barossa grape growers, and their treasured vineyards. His passion for, and commitment to, the Barossa is infectious and continues with everyone today that is associated with Peter Lehmann Wines, now under the guidance of son Doug Lehmann.

South Australia

The Eden Valley is between 400 and 600 metres in the Barossa Range, part of the Mount Lofty Range. It shares it historical roots with the Barossa Valley. Yalumba has substantial vineyard holdings, and a winery at Angaston, the site of the first vines planted by founder Samuel Smith in 1849. The cool climate provides ideal conditions for the production of high quality Riesling, Chardonnay and Shiraz wine.

Riesling

Possible one of the greatest white grape varieties in the world. It can make outstanding wines with power, flavour, elegance, and has the ability to age. The range of styles vary from the light and crisp to rich sweet desert wines.
