Langmeil Fifth Wave Grenache

Langmeil Fifth Wave Grenache

Langmeil Fifth Wave Grenache

The Fifth Wave is Langmeil’s most treasured Old Vine Garden Grenache and is dedicated to the fifth generation of the Lindner family. Planted in the middle of the last century, The Fifth Wave
is our ‘call to arms’ to protect, preserve and celebrate the best of the Barossa. Once a neglected Old Vine Garden in Lyndoch, The Fifth Wave vineyard was rejuvenated by Langmeil and in
1999 winemaker Paul Lindner saw the potential of the Grenache from this unique vineyard and with tenacity convinced the owners to produce a straight varietal, in all likelihood the first time
Grenache from this time honoured Old Vine Garden had been truly prized.
All Langmeil’s Old Vine Gardens are treated as national treasures and are all hand tended, from pruning to harvesting. We then employ traditional hands-on winemaking; gentle de-stemming,
open fermentation and basket pressing into 100% seasoned French oak barrels, without fining or filtration, to capture the true essence of the variety and region.

2015 VINTAGE REPORT
Good winter rains and warmer temperatures in early spring brought about slightly earlier budburst and excellent shoot growth. A lovely growing
season with no crazy, stormy or very windy northerly weather to affect flowering resulted in a great fruit set across all varieties. However, the
northern Barossa, and a few other seemingly random patches of vineyard, were hit by late frosts resulting in a huge loss for that sub region. After a
quite chilly Christmas and New Year the warm and dry weather was upon us, perfect ripening weather.
An early and fast vintage for the Barossa Valley had Langmeil at full fermentation capacity for three and a half weeks meaning 75% of our grape
intake in less than a month, phew! The later ripening varieties like Grenache and Mataro still took their time and of course Eden Valley Shiraz
and Cabernet Sauvignon are always late, so vintage soon wound down to a leisurely pace ending in the middle of April.
Overall 2015 was an excellent vintage with great flavour, colour and intensity across the board
Colour: Light to medium depth crimson.
Aroma: Dark cherry and raspberry fruits mingle with sweet and white
pepper spice and hints of vanilla add to the complexity.
Palate: Ripe, red berry and dark cherry flows onto the palate, melding into
lovely sweet and briary spice. The finish lingers on a fruitful and spicy note
with typical chalky yet fine tannins.
Cellaring: 2017 – 202

Langmeil

“Family owned and operated, Langmeil is the home of the Barossa and Australia’s oldest surviving vineyard planted to Shiraz in 1843, from where the iconic Freedom 1843 Shiraz hails.
Although it is not that many vintages since the Bitter and Lindner families re-established the abandoned winery, Langmeil has had considerable success and was recently awarded 5 Stars in the Halliday Wine Companion.

South Australia

The Barossa Valley is one of the major regions in Australia, where many of the major wine companies are based. It is believed the first vineyards were planted in the 1840s by Silesian migrants (who settled in Bethany). There followed a rapid expansion of plantations. The early styles of wines produced were heavy dry red wines and fortified wines that were popular both domestically and in Britain. After the Second World War the styles shifted to lighter table wines with production of Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The Barossa Valley is home to some very well known names such as Seppelt, Wolf Blass and Penfolds as well as many smaller producers. The climate is Mediterranean with hot dry summers and cool wet winters, making it ideal for viticulture. The main wine styles: White – Semillon, Riesling, Chardonnay, Semillon-Chardonnay blend; Red – Shiraz (full bodied & ripe) with Old Vine Shiraz a speciality of many vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Shiraz-Grenache-Mataro blend, Cabernet-Merlot blend.
