Skillogalee Riesling

Skillogalee Riesling

The grapes for this dry Riesling were grown on low-yielding vines, on the highest slopes of the Skillogalee estate (about 500 metres above sea level). The family-owned vineyard is managed in accordance with sustainable farming practices.

The fruit was processed in a number of individual parcels, with each contour/block of vines picked as it reached its optimum ripeness and flavour. Each parcel was then fermented separately, allowing us to foster the individual characteristics of each, before blending immediately prior to bottling.
The wine is bright straw in appearance, with a green tinge. The nose has a perfumed lift of jasmine, orange blossom spice and lemon zest. The palate is full-flavoured with excellent fruit concentration and texture. Flavours of lemon/lime zest and pith prevail, with hints of citrus spice and succulent, juicy acidity emerging thereafter. Structurally, this wine has impressive length, a lively natural acid backbone and a mouth-wateringly powerful finish.
Drink now with fish, seafood or white meat dishes, or cellar for up to 10 years.

Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Skillogalee was established in 1970 with the first wines released in 1976. The 1978 dry riesling won major trophies at the Adelaide Wine Show and the National Wine Show, putting Skillogalee firmly on the Australian winemaking map! The wines are produced exclusively from grapes grown on our own vineyards and styles include crisp dry whites (riesling, gewürztraminer and chardonnay), a full flavoured rosé, rich, full-bodied reds (shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and blends) and some luscious fortified wines.

The vineyards were planted in the early 1970s on what was then, at almost 500 metres above sea level, one of the highest vineyards in South Australia. The rows are planted on the contour in shallow stony soils mainly on steep eastern facing slopes.

Skillogalee

Skillogalee is a 150 acre property found within the Clare Valley wine region. The property and business were purchased by Dave and Diana Palmer in 1989, however grapes were first grown on the property, in the early 1970’s, on vineyards that are generally quite steep with eastern facing slopes. All the fruit for the wines from Skillogalee is produced from their own vineyards. Within Clare Skillogalee occupies the western extreme of the Sevenhill sub-region. The Skillogalee Valley represents a separate viticultural area, distinct from the main valley and the Polish Hill Valley further west. It is separated from the main valley by a distinct north-south ridge. Rainfall tends to be a little higher than other parts of the Valley.

South Australia

Vineyards were first established in the mid 1800s. Some of the early winery names, Wendouree, Knappstein and Quelltaler are still in the region. Nowadays there is a mix of very large companies and a significant number of boutique wineries. The climate is regarded as warm, but there are variations due to altitude. The main wine styles: White – Riesling, Semillon, Chardonnay; Red – Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon.
