FSW 8B Wratonbully Botrytis Viognier

FSW 8B Wratonbully Botrytis Viognier (37.5cl)

FSW 8B Wratonbully Botrytis Viognier – Autumn in Wrattonbully – dewy mornings, soft mists and warm sun on ripe grapes – perfect for ‘Botrytis cinerea’ and the naturally alluring Viognier grape to unite and create the golden nectar that becomes Yalumba Hand Picked Botrytis Viognier. The intense flavours of Viognier have great synergy with the richness of the Botrytis, offering opulent flavours of apricots, peaches and spice. Exotic, luscious, long and elegant, this wine is an experience to be shared.

A select patch of our Viognier vines are encouraged to grow a dense canopy reducing air flow and encouraging the infection by and growth of Botrytis cinerea. Botrytised grapes are difficult to press and several pressings are required to liberate all of the viscous nectar. Good quality juices are hard to ferment, so a special yeast strain is used to balance the ideal sugar levels, allowing the wine to find its natural balance.

The nose is intense honeysuckle, musk and vanilla with high tones of lemon thyme and ginger. The palate is long and luscious with opulent flavours of stone fruit and spice. The balance is perfect, delicately poised between sweetness and acidity. This finish is lingering and memorable.

Jansz Premium NV Cuvée

Jansz Premium NV Cuvée

Tasmania is renowned as Australia’s home of great sparkling wines. The fruit used in this Jansz Premium NV Cuvée is grown on selected, cool climate vineyards across Tasmania.
To maximize blending options and complexity in the final wine, batches are kept separate during winemaking. Secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle and is aged on yeast lees for as long as possible. The perfect balance for our Premium Cuvée is reached at just over two years.
Honeysuckle and citrus scents are immediately apparent with slight aromas of nougat, roasted nuts and a hint of strawberry from the Pinot Noir. A well-balanced palate of delicate fruits and creaminess fills the mouth with a lingering finish of citrus and nougat.

The Jansz Premium NV Cuvée is based upon Jansz wines of several vintages with specially selected and crafted individual batches from the cooler locations in South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria, with the largest regional parcels being Tasmanian. The matching of the crisp and fine flavours has resulted in a structured wine of medium body with zesty fruit characters.

The Wild Pixie Shiraz

d'Arenberg The Wild Pixie Shiraz

d’Arenberg The Wild Pixie Shiraz 94% – Shiraz, 6% Rousanne

In 2006, Chester added a small parcel of Roussanne to The Stump Jump White. A wine journalist described him as a ‘wild pixie’ for concocting such a crazy blend. Taking that as a compliment, Chester went on to make an even more audacious blend with Roussanne, this time combining it with Shiraz.

This wine is very tight and closed and may need decanting upon opening. It has vibrant red berry, ironstone and lifted spice aromas. The palate is fine and linear and finishes with mouth puckering tannin and crunchy acidity. This wine is built to last and needs some cellaring to reach its full potential.

Small batches of grapes are gently crushed and then transferred to open fermenters. Foot treading is undertaken two thirds of the way through fermentation, the wine is basket pressed and transferred to a mixture of old French and American oak to complete fermentation and matured for up to 12 months.

d’Arenberg The Wild Pixie Shiraz has an unmistakeable connection with the earth from which it emerged, and is the perfect accompaniment to a rustic BBQ cooked over a glowing campfire on a cold starry night. The flavours and aromas of earth, soot and game perfectly complement the setting. Dig deeper and find added complexities resembling rich, concentrated duck jus, quince paste and dried fig. Primary blackberry and mulberry notes appear as the wine develops in the glass. A generous warm wine with an abundance of savoury and dark fruits, completed by a fine emery like tannin trailing to subtle wood spice and vanillan notes.

A very different shiraz from the others in the range, but well worth a try.

Katnook Founder’s Block wines are named in honour of the original land holding of John Riddoch, the founder of Coonawarra.

The Founder’s Block range is styled for everyday enjoyment, inviting a modern generation of wine consumers to explore the pleasures of Coonawarra wine. The wines are grounded in the past but genuinely focused on the present. They are honest, fruit driven, harmonious and shine with pure Coonawarra character.

Katnook’s rich history stretches back to 1896, when Coonawarra’s first vintage was crafted in our Woolshed by entrepreneurial wine pioneer, John Riddoch – who immigrated from Scotland. He recognised the enormous potential of the maritime climate and unique terra rossa soils which now define Coonawarra wine styles.
But it all began even earlier. In 1861, Riddoch arrived in Coonawarra, after successfully operating a trading post in the goldfields. He purchased vast parcels of land over the years and was impressed with the remarkable rate of growth of fruit trees and vines. In 1867 John commissioned the building of his ‘Woolshed’ which still operates as Katnook’s barrel room today. Determined to encourage closer settlement in the southeast, in 1890 Riddoch formed the Coonawarra Fruit Colony, established its administration headquarters at ‘Katnook’ and sold off his land in 10 acre blocks. It was here at ‘Katnook’ that the Coonawarra wine region was born.
Riddoch planted 140 acres of vines and his first vintage in 1895 was a modest event in a neighbouring nursery shed. However, his second, with a much greater volume of fruit and attended to by qualified winemaker William Salter was made in the woolshed at ‘Katnook’ in 1896. By all accounts this second vintage gave an indication of the outstanding quality that was to come.

Tamar Ridge Devils Corner Sauvignon Blanc

Devils Corner Sauvignon Blanc

Devils Corner Sauvignon Blanc

Pronounced aromas of fresh cut grass with a wash of zesty lemons and a drizzle of asparagus. The fresh cut grass flows through to the palate with a hint of leafy green herbs. Overall a wine that is bursting with gentle mouthfilling fruit flavours while leading to a finish that is crisp and refreshing.

To produce Devils Corner Sauvignon Blanc grapes are sourced from vineyards located in Tasmania’s Tamar Valley and the East Coast of the island. This multi-vineyard approach allows focus on the strengths of each location and produce a more consistent, crisp and fresh Sauvignon Blanc. The bouquet displays grassiness, asparagus and tomato bush leaf. This is interwoven with hints of passionfruit and citrus. The passionfruit flows through to the palate with delicate fruit sweetness and crisp acidity. Overall a wine that is bursting with flavour while leading to a finish that is crisp and refreshing. Try with any seafood (especially calamari and fried whitebait) or char-grilled asparagus drizzled with olive oil and a really good shaved aged parmesan cheese; or an Asian-inspired seafood salad; or just enjoy it on its own.
